This seems like really, really bad news for the tuner hardware manufacturers and thus for us too. Finally with Windows 7 they were able to stop providing decoders and media center software for the most part. Now they'll have to either require Win8 Pro w/Media Center or go back to partnering with other media center alternatives and decoder providers, increasing their costs and a larger support headache. And if BDA support isn't included in Win8 by default - surely MS won't remove that - it'll be even worse.

Windows 7 is going to have a long life at my house.

Has anyone tried running NPVR on Win 8 Release Preview? I am rebuilding my server and want to try out the new "Storage Spaces" in Win8 but was wondering if there would be any problems running NPVR.

bac42x has it working. He needed to set a registry setting but that was because of his stream, not Win8 (I had to do the same on Win7 to play his stream).

Looks as though MS are not being so greedy on the cost of an update license as previously - UK price is going to be £25 to upgrade from XP Vista or 7 to download with the media center being a free download.
At that price I will probably upgrade from Vista for the HTPC at least. Probably going to download the release preview next week and unless it is totally quap will get the upgrade at the end of October when it comes out.

Anybody got any good tips or observations before I go for it. Other than to do an image of the C drive first Big Grin
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

They can't be greedy or no one will upgrade. W7 was too expensive but good. W8 isn't expensive and from the looks of it, just a new pair of clothes on the OS.
