Does Sage prevent duplicate recordings if a first-run show is on more than one channel? Be interesting to see the logic diagram for this, with tuner allocation and all. Maybe it is in Google code? Smile

Based on my experience as a SageTV user, the answer is no, there is never a duplicate recording if the shows are on more than one channel. The scheduler constantly moves shows around in it's upcoming recording list to accommodate recording as many shows as soon as possible. With me never knowing what channel the show came from, unless I dig into the show details and try to find out. Even then the channel number isn't easily found, it displays the network call letters instead in the recording details.

For example, in my local (Winnipeg, Canada) guide, I can have the same show on at the same time on different channels, both in SD and HD. The scheduler will do it's best to record HD versions of this show first at any time or day coming up. If no HD versions are going to be available without conflict, it will settle for an SD version on one of the channel this show is on. If need be, to make sure the first run show does get recorded, it will bump another scheduled show from it's HD channel time slot down to a SD version, to make sure both First Run shows get recorded. I have 3 tuners, and most shows I have set as "favourites" get recorded in HD, and the occasional one ends up in SD, and it appears to be due to scheduling to make sure I at least get some version of the First Run show. In my experience, I rarely have to manually deal with scheduling conflicts. Scheduling conflicts are mainly just for movies where it's only in a lineup once or twice and has minimal opportunities to select another time slot.

SageTV gives preference to HD channels in lineups first before SD channels for the same shows. And in my experience it gives tuners that are set to higher quality content (HD) preference over SD tuners. And for me when I added a new Hauppauge HD-PVR device to the tuner list, it would place them higher than a Hauppauge SD card. And the scheduler would use tuners at the top of the list first, only using SD tuners if it wasn't possible to record a First Run show in HD.

I doubt you will find any open source Google code for SageTV. It was a for profit software before they bought it, and as far as I know, it's now used in only their trial set top box where they are offering Google Fiber. I've read that Google Fiber users that dig down into the settings can still see SageTV references that haven't been purged from the code yet. It would be great if they shared it, or open sourced it, I agree. The best thing about SageTV is it's scheduling capabilities. The second thing is that all options and settings, including advanced features, can all be manipulated using the remote control 10ft interface.
