DVBLink has an http interface so yeah, that could work with Network Recorder. SageDCT is only needed to interface to DCT tuners not supported by NextPVR. The Silicondust web site does show NZ so if you want dvb t/c without a PC it is a better choice. I can use my NextPVR in a Virtual Box VM to my HDHR with no issue. If you need two Windows 7/8 license plus hypev-v and windows server the solution makes little sense from the Windows tax perspective.

As Martin says, and besides, I would not recommend running a npvr server (with tuners that is) in a VM, it might work for USB tuners but it is VERY tricky to get working with PCI/PCI-e tuners and only with a VMWARE installation (and that costs money too). For recording you would need to access real HD's instead of a virtual disk or the overhead may be too large, another complicating factor.

My recommendation woult be to run the npvr server in a real pc, let it take care of all recording and use XBMC or a npvr client with a small (maybe SSD equipped) htpc.

I'll have to read more about dvblink and network recorder. I thought I'd ruled dvblink out because reddwarf said
Quote:The old version of DVBLink (I think it was a beta that I tested some years ago) had the option of creating virtual tuners that linked to the real tuners on a remote computer, you could scan and tune an do whatever on the virtual tuner and it would reflect on the real tuner. The new version however, does not support this option."

I only get DVB-S at my house, so I think that rules out HDHR after all.

I won't go into why, but I am not subject to the windows tax Smile

I got the impression I can share the physical tuners by installing npvr on the machine with the tuners and configuring it and the virtual npvr somehow?

Yeah, I'll have a big disk dedicated to recordings. Was thinking about adding this physical disk to the VM instead of using a vhd file.

Yes, I'm thinking about getting a SSD for the htpc. I may well end up putting npvr on the hyper-v host and just doing my recordings there, but if it's not too difficult to set up then I'd like to try the vm option and have it using physical tuners on the host. The hardest part is getting my head around the components I'm not familiar with.

Much easier solution would have been the HDHomeRuns - as they can just sit out on the network and be accessed by a VM or a physical machine - I may do that in the future.

But as you noted they don't have a DVB-S version.

None of my business, let me just remind you that Microsoft has put out a $100.000 reward for anyone who exposes an illegal Windows-8 installation Big Grin

Oh, the Windows TAX. I see, yes, you're right. This will all cost way too much. Smile
