Problem solved - I had application set to "Other" in the HDHR setup utility. I forget why it was I changed that - perhaps some problem-solving with my older HDHR unit.

Happily humming along recording H.264/AVC now.

Additional note: I had to update the firmware on the HDHR Plus, seems the version I was on had issues with the the video feed freezing during live transcoding. Seems to be fixed with the latest beta firmware release.

I lucked into a deal on newegg.ca and was able to order the HDTC for $95 (CDN) ~$122 with taxes and shipping so I couldn't resist ordering one. It will be interesting pitting it up against my HDHR4 before putting one or the other onto ebay.

At this point I wouldn't mind getting another, but to really make use of it I'd have to set up an additional wireless AP in my house to serve the Roku/Plex setup with a more solid network connection. It's also crossed my mind to look for a Roku 2XS, which I can connect on wired gigabit. DLNA streaming straight to my PS3 *mostly* works, though the problem there might lie with my router.

The Plus model still has some network hiccups that cause live playback on the PS3 to stutter/freeze, even though I have that connected on wired. I may need a slightly higher quality router, too.

It's for sure nice to not have to run coax or connect an antenna to each TV.

For now, all of my projects are on hold - I'll be relocating to CO soon and have no idea what kind of TV service we'll have or even whether we'll be in an apartment or a house.

I just installed mine and it took under a minute to set it into NextPVR just copying the settings from the existing device and restarting the recording service.

I did a simultaneous ~3 min. 1080i recording on the TC and the ATSC raw stream and while the source wasn't the same the savings are about 40% in Heavy mode.

Hi Martin,

I get about the same. I am curious, do you use comskip? Because I found that the comskip breakpoints are off for the H264 recordings but work great with MPEG2. As I see you are in Canada (not sure where, but I am in TO), you would likely run into the same issue.

If you come across the problem and are able to fix it (or don't have it), it would be appreciated if you could pass on your comskip.ini?

Thanks

I use comskip on h264 with my HDVPR all the time and it is nearly flawless on using XBMC for comskip with NextPVR. I have not tried to comskip any output for the HDHR yet. I'm in Ottawa, so naturally I have to hate T), but I won't hold that against you!. My biggest problem now is CTV is a tiny bit weak for me on all ATSC tuners and I get drops every 5 minutes or so and it isn't a good for testing, but with the HDPVR it's not worth putting a lot of effort into improving it. I will set up a comskip test on Madam Secretary tonight.

I'm using the latest version of "donators version" (which I assume the both of you are using, by virtue of needing H.264 support) of Comskip and I actually feel like the performance of picking the skip points is even better on H.264 TS than on MPEG2 TS...

Of course I am not in Canada.

I had a really bad comskip experience with Madame Secretary with the HDTC although it was slightly better when I remuxed it first. There was a major delay in the file between audio and video and that might be why it starts early and jumps early. Much the same results with NextPVR and XBMC too. I tried with the HDPVR on a second showing and it was perfect.

I'll try tomorrow night with 2 Broke Girls and record the same channel on both devices.

Yeah, I'm essentially remuxing (via VideoRedo) prior to comskip to fix janky timelines on my OTA service... I think that might be part of it.
