Also do you have to use Docker? Running on bare metal with Ubuntu offers many advantages over Docker and there are very valid reasons I could see for running NextPVR in a container. This might offer better transcoding if you want to use the browser.

Too bad to hear about Safari, it is by far the best choice for video if sub ever implements smart transcoding since it can play HEVC and AC3 audio.

If you don't like the Kodi interface the knewc addon for Kodi also offers the UI client interface until sub's app is ready.

Yes, I have to use Promox because I am running other stuff on my server and also because of its great backup features. No way to change this.

I do not understand the last sentence "If you don't like the Kodi interface ..."
Presently Kodi is the only solution to operate NextPVR on a Mac.

@sub: Thanks for the explanation.

For Kodi you posted "the user interface is not well designed.  The knewc add-on for Kodi https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?tid=50833 provides the UI Client interface on the Mac.  This is the same thing that you will see with the dedicated app sub is working on and is also the same interface that Windows users see in NextPVR.exe

As for overheating, I suspect you have an issue that your graphic card is not using h/w acceleration and a post on the Kodi forum should be able to solve this.  You can get some idea by hitting O during video playback.  My Hackintosh reports the same CPU use as my Windows machine.

Thanks for the feedback.
The Kodi Forum is not really supporting Macs well.
All the issues I have reported where never resolved. Some issues are years old.

So I have given up posting anything there and also searching for solutions.

Odd the lead PVR developer @ksooo uses MAC so I am surprised it is not a good platform. I did retry yesterday and noticed an issue with mpeg2video but h264 video had very low CPU. This can be mitigated by using the pvr.nextpvr transcoding option but then you aren't using direct play.

Whether or not your Mac becomes hot depends on the model.
My early 2015 MacBook Pro stays pretty cool, my MacBook Air 2013 is getting very hot but also my MacBook Pro 16 early 2020 is getting hot.

The bug which I reported that is not been fixed for years is the crash one is getting if you are stopping Kodi via the CMD Q key.

But after all, I am only using occasionally my Mac to watch TV. Most of the time I am using Fire TV Stick Max. This is working somehow.

My Kodi has always crashes on exit (not with the Q) I figured it was this one https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/18324 in combination with using a Hackintosh. However if you look at that issue report there are no crash dumps for Matrix so without that the issue is effectively closed. A new linked issue with the required crash dumps is required. Kodi is a community project that requires community input on github.
