PVRity Wrote:MCE is probably one of the strictest TOS around. I looked at Y! and did not see anything similar. So let's look at MCE's TOS: The underlined portion that says "The EPG may only be accessed with an authorized personal computer using the Product" allows access with MCE, and I agree if you haven't paid for MCE and don't use a computer with MCE to d/l the data you are not authorized to access their EPG.

The underlined portion that says: "You may not modify, copy, distribute, display, perform, sell, lease, license or create derivative works of any information obtained from the EPG" does not seem to me to prohibit personal use. I think we can eliminate "distribute, perform, sell, lease and license" from consideration since personal use does not include those things.

I think "modify, display and copy" have to be read in light of the license which clearlry allows use of the data for a PVR (MCE). If you tried to read this so strictly that you couldn't even display the info on your monitor, or make a backup or copy it into RAM or copy it onto your HD, etc. you couldn't even use the EPG data for MCE. Since the license does not say you can copy it for MCE, but not for a similar PVR, any copying modification or displaying allowed for MCE is allowed by the license and anything allowed by the license that is not specifically allowed for only MCE is allowed - even for another PVR (provided that Microsoft has been paid for the EPG by purchase of MCE.)

Finally, we don't have to worry about "create derivative works of information" A "derivative work" is a copyright concept and applies only to copyrightable works, not uncopyrightable TV schedule facts or "information".

Microsoft has lots of expensive lawyers to write these things. It's not that hard to write "You can't use the EPG data to schedule recordings with any other PVR program."

Add to these comments my personal belief that there are limits on the restrictions that Microsoft can impose, even by their written agreement, with respect to the use of uncopyrightable "information" (to use their own words from the license). When I pay for certain information (and I currently own two copies of MCE, one copy of an ATI Wonder program, a TiVo and Y! all of which supply the EPG data) I believe I have the right to make personal use of it. That right is even stronger when the information in question is not copyrightable.

I guess the bottom line is that whurlston is the one writing the code, so I guess what the coder says goes. There are a couple of other alternatives that will still be developed if you feel (as I do) that using "free" EPG data is worth the extra hassle of setup. I agree with you 100% about letting the user decide what to do - I said as much in another post somewhere here.

As fun as debating this is, I've chosen not to continue despite my belief. Why? If SD fails we'll need folks like whurlston to help with this again! I'll agree to disagree, as whurlston said, with those on the other side of the fence.

whurlston Wrote:Sorry but I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you have Y! Go for TV running (not just installed) while trying to run the EPG update for GB-PVR? If so, the Y! database may be locked. Go for TV does not have to be running, only installed.
No, I ran Y!G4TV only the one time (after installation) to put in my username & password. Then, I shut it down (no services running, no GUI). What it looks like is that if I manually run the EPGUpdate.bat, I get the listings fine. If GBPVR runs EPGUpdate.bat when scheduled, it passes this weird e-mail address & password (listed above) for "logon."

I'm at work now... tell you what, I'll post the log file from my successful manual update (I ran it just before left for work) and the log with the goofy stuff from the scheduled EPG update. I'll post them sometime tomorrow so you can maybe see what I'm getting. Thanks!

Don't worry smajor. Nothing has been said that has upset me (by you or anyone else). I enjoy lively debate but I feel that this debate should be in another thread. If SD were to fail or were to provide seriously inadequate data, I would not hesitate to return to developing this application. I just don't want to spend the time developing it when I can pay a minimal fee and spend my time doing other things. -Oz- is continuing work on his version of the Y! grabber and I don't have a problem with him doing it. My points about the TOS were simply to inform people as to the choice they were making.

@ all

That's all I was doing too. I'm sorry if I came across in a way I had not intended...

Here's my log files. YahooXMLTv_manual.txt is the log from when I manually run the log file, YahooXMLTv_Auto.txt is the log from when GBPVR fires off the EPGUpdate.bat. The user ID running the batch file is the same. Thanks for looking at them - I just want to keep using this until SchedulesDirect is available & paid for. Smile

Interesting, I never created a user in Go for TV. Try going into Go for TV -> Settings -> Remove One or All Users (option 3). Remove all the users and see if It still happens.

I tried setting up the listings and eventually realized that one of the providers (my local directv provider) always fails. If I pick the national one it succeeds but with no local channels. It is not whurlston's app. Yahoo go does the same thing. Has anyone else seen this? The zip is 32833 (Select Directv melbourne/orlando). Any suggestions?

Is it possible to have two listings for yahoo, or does anyone know where the listings are stored (so I can flip listing files if yahoo doesnt support multiple listings). Perhaps pull down cable companies listings for the local channels then pull down the directv national listings for everything else. I can write the app to merge the xml's if needed.

I had to use offset=+0000 to get the showtimes to be correct. Why don't I have to use offset=-0800 since I'm PST? Are you calculating the offset from UTC in your app?

@Wakalaka: GBPVR will do this for you automagically using the TZ settings from the operating system. I think I read that here in the Forums somewhere.

I'll try that; if it doesn't work, I'll just run it manually every couple of days through Terminal Services until SD is up & running. I just didn't know if you'd seen this before. Thanks!
