Hi guys,

thanks for these replies - you have been most helpful.

I have just bought a S-Video converter - this was the problem with the B&W image - I just plugged the s-video lead straight into the scart - of course it needed to be converted beforehand!! - Doh!!!

I did say I was a newbie!!

Just a note to the WinXP remote desktop. You can only have one session at at time with the XP RD unlike Win2k3. This means that if you are watching TV on it and you decide to remote in, it will lock the screen until you log out of remote desktop. Then you will need to log back in to see the desktop again.

Just a heads up on that. Wink

Thanks for that - I probably won't be doing both at the same time anyway, thankfully.

I was really just exploring a way to de-commission my server, which is getting old and tired and looking for a rest ;-)

...however, I just bought a converter, and it's still in B&W!!??

I took the cable next door to my neighbours house to test it, and sure enough - it's colour there!!!! He made me another cable up, it worked in colour at his house, B&W at mine - again.

Could this be that my TV just doesn't support the signal? It's nearly 5 years old, so getting on a bit.
I thought this, so I plugged a VCR in, output to the TV via coax and used the s-video to scart into the vcr. STILL B&W!!! Arrrggghhh!!

If it is the TV, then I will get a new one - and this time I'll make sure it can take S-Video directly.

Yep except that if you're talking about correctly licensed software, one is about 1/5th the price of the other, that makes it an expensive way of getting TWO remote desktop sessions instead of one while not taking over the desktop.

One of my personal favourites for remote control is RAdmin from www.famatech.com
