I don't want that.
Plus it look like I still have to buy a wifi-card for it.
It's gotta be an older model.

The new model comes with 802.11g.
That costs quite a bit more.

... yes, I agree about TigerDirect description, it's written you needs to buy
a wifi card for it.

Maybe it's a clearance item, as it's often the case at TigerDirect.

In my case, I don't bother about wireless or not, it's very secondary,
as I can pass a network cable.

I'm more concerned about image quality. This product offers
component and even DVI output, but at no place the display
resolutions are specified. I suspect it's only the plain old 480i or
480p.

That was something else I noticed.
I couldn't find output info either.
There is a manual on the website however it doesn't really say much.
In fact the whole website doesn't say much about the product.

I order one of these units on the strength of this review:

http://www.product-testing-labs.com/media-link.html

It's about what I paid for my MVP. I am expecting a wireless card since the title on the page reads ADS Media Link Home Media Server >> w/Wireless Card <<, however I won't be disappointed if it doesn't since wired is no problem for me (be nice to try though). I like my MVP, but if the Divx/Xvid support in this unit is half decent and the FFWD/REW work as claimed in the review I'll be pretty happy.

Looks good. Did see someone saying that is only going to have a real basic UI. Pity.

If it supports GBPVR's protocol and is a reasonable price then I like the looks of that thing.

I've looked at this as well as the TViX HD-5000. Snazzio has something similar. They all use the same Sigma chipset so they can do mpeg2 and mpeg4 with hardware (unlike the MVP) and should be able to do HD mpeg2 TS files (like ATSC), though currently I think that works best from the internal drive on the Pixelmagic because SMB adds too much overhead to do it from a share (for 19Mbs files). Anyway, these all have their own UI, or perhaps support UPnP, so you won't get GB-PVR's UI on these things. That's not entirely bad, because for ones that support a NAS you don't have to have the server on to watch tv if you have a NAS device. But it is nice to have a consistent UI to access (and comskip!). The best possibility for that would be the Roku HD box, since it is an open Linux platform. There is already a MythTV frontend for it, so there's not reason a GB-PVR frontend couldn't be created as well. It would just be a lot of work. I saw on another thread that perhaps if a box supported the remote UI component of UPnP GB-PVR could also utilize that. I think these boxes are around 250-350 USD.

... how much is it priced ?

The big incentive for this kind of product is the low price. I also
seen many units that do a lot of things, and also supports HDTV
resolutions.

But at prices around $500 - $600 CAD, it doesn't worth it. Near
this price, I can also consider building a real computer that do
all these features or simply buy a DVD recorder with 250 GB Harddisk.

The interesting point about the ADS unit is that it seems to do a lot
for almost nothing ($$$). I mean at a comparable price to the original
MVP ($115 CAD).

... can you write us a mini-review after reception ? :-)

What are the main annoyances regarding the MVP ?

... yes. But I think functional considerations are more important than
the flashy interface.

And I'm very concerned about these, about the ADS:

- Will real-time view of shows will work at all ?
- What about pausing a show currently broadcasted ?
- How channels will be changed ?
- No more onscreen tv guide ?
- No more easy recording scheduling ?

My point is this unit, contrary of the GBPVR-MVP combo, is likely to
be used only for pre-recorded shows/movies and for picture seeing + mp3
audition.

It will lack a lot of features and flexibility of a normal HTPC and even
of what can be offered by the GBPVR-MVP combo.

Bye!
