How about an ability to actually *schedule* a recording on someone else's box? That schedule would definitely be some sort of lowest-prio-in-the world, but the system could try to record on anyone else's box... anyone in the group that has an available tuner... Smile I'm inspired here by mobiusnz's PVR farm vision =)

The first version of xshare (probably should rename it) so it is less attention getting can already remotely schedule a show. It does it using the same interface as xsearch but in an application not a plugin. It automatically fails with an error message if the new show would result in a conflict.

You can specify if you want remote users to be able to schedule or not. I want to make it per user. I want SSL encryption as well. I have added poster viewing for the next release. And added an upload file progress bar.

I want to work on it for another week or so before releasing v.02

I love the vision of a recording farm that you can download shows from. That would be cool. Unfortuantly it bring very negative attention quickly.

Cool. Looking good.

Fair enough. I assume, however, that it would be pretty manual... I need to specify which computer to use? The ultimate thing would be if xshare would automatically find an available tuner, right? I realize that would be hard to do, but still =) If the owner of the tuner I had scheduled wants to use his tuner for something else, then xshare automatically would find another available tuner in my group of tuners I am allowed to set schedules on... Big Grin

Yeah... I know... mobiusnz's vision was, however, not quite that, but to be able to use all his spare computers at home to record shows... that would be cool too (not that I have a bunch of spare computers hanging around, but...)

I like the idea of the program, but as others have said this is a fine line we are treading. Already, CNN and Cartoon Network, along with several other studios are sueing Cablevision for similar idea:

Xshare is a simple client server file sharing tool that you can connect to your pvr or your friends. Schedule shows (if permitted) download and upload shows.

This is not a bug free release. It is to get people involved and curious probably not ready for the non advanced user.

Please post bugs here.

Jorm, Perhaps I'm not doing something incorrectly but, I'm not getting any indication the server is running. Other then a quick dos box. When I try to to log in from the local machine it drops out as I try to type a user name. What did I miss?

I'm still running the previous version of GBPVR.

Thanks

in one dos box type xshare -server

in the other type xshare.

then specify the login information. Do you get that far?

Eventually the server will be an icon in the bottom right.

What is intresting. Is fair use said that you can make a copy of a show even on HBO for personal use onto VHS. Assuming you do not keep it for more than 30 days or so. The cable vision article talks about retransmitting is illegal. Which we all do every day to our MVP's.

It is a gray line. Fair use is in there somewhere.

a_bass,

I think you are the first one besides me to play with it. I have ported the code to 97.7 it should still work with 96.x but not sure. I can debug it and add support if necessary my main box is still on 96.x

This not exactly the same. The difference here the consumer stores their recordings on a server owned by a different person. For the consumer to watch this, the case is arguing that Cable Vision are re-transmitting the program to the consumer. In the case of the MVP, you record a program to your PVR, then view it using an MVP. Its all locally done with no-one else involved.

It looks like its looking for the new database not the old one. This is what i get when I try to run the server:

Any ideas?
