Yes I understand most people may not have got the reference - but had had a few when posting and was the first thing that came to mind...

If nothing else, it took the thread off into new, interesting, places.

I suspect that doesn't quite mean the same as 'throwing the toys/dummy/rattle out of the pram' - any chance of an explanation?

I'm guessing it's a reference to 'cow tipping'.

Apparently, cows sleep standing up (or some breeds do). If you sneak up on them and push them over they just go down sideways. The mental image is quite amusing if it's a 'cartoon' cow but I've heard that the real cows get pretty stressed about the whole thing.

Cheers,
Brian

You'll probably find that 'pacifier' is predominately North American English (US and Canada according to my dictionary). The word 'dummy' is, urrm, well - just English - not specifically aussie or kiwi.

Remember folks - we spoke English here before anybody else in the world. Rolleyes

I can see that - I mean if I was standing there sleeping and somebody pushed me over, I'd be pretty P1$$3d off...

And I probably would have picked "spitting the dummy" to be an NZ/Oz term only, but possibly English.

Although googling ( http://www.google.com/search?q=%22spitti...=firefox-a ) gets references to a number of Australian sites.

Well... it was when I lived there I learned the word for it. For some reason, neither "dummy" nor "pacifier" is a word we learn in school here Smile I guess they figure that we don't need to know a word for it in yet a few years when you are in school Wink

I asked a few English-Canadian friends and we all know it is a "soother"
