Graham Wrote:I have been thinking for a long time that I could write an up-to-date version of the quickstart guide. This thread might be the motivation to get me off the sofa and typing something.

The image in my mind is a step by step guide listing the minimum necessary to get a working GBPVR. For example, in the beginning a newbie should leave the defaults wherever possible, we should describe the steps (or include a link) to get XMLTV data from one simple/reliable source for each country, a newbie should start with DVR-MS recording because it works, we should describe the steps to get a single tuner on one card working as a first step, each page in the guide should be really brief and should not appear complicated or intimidating.

We should include troubleshooters for all the common problems that we see in this forum incluing, for example, under-powered graphics cards and dodgy decoders.

The un-typed version that is in my head is probably about twenty or thirty very brief pages.

Will I have comitted myself to do something when I hit the Submit Reply button?

Great idea. Been thinking of somethign similar myself. Graham, if you do get around to doing it, may I suggest that the entry is dated? In this way, users who come along in a year or two's time can then make an assessment of exactly how up-to-date they can expect it to be.

I've always found that hugely helpful, since here, as in so many other place, the documentation was first written several versions ago and has never really been given an overhaul since.

Hmmm,

this all requires a thought process as 1 + 1 makes 2 (apparently). In this instance 1 + 1 may make 3.....

Will wait to see if Wiki is accessible to me and then would love to make changes.

Cheers

I absolutely love the setup for GBPVR. sub has full control over the main project so things get done on that front. He has built in an unbelievable plugin architecture so that things that are not priority for him can be accomplished by someone else without sending the main project off on a tangent. (Netflix is not exactly a valued addition for sub). And then there are the people who can explain in simple, non technical terms what those of us in the middle group are doing. All vital parts of the community.
Yep - that's probably what I should have said in the first place...Big Grin

Not needed (or, more importantly, not supported) if they're setting up an analogue card with MPEG-2 encoder...

No you won't. Steeb was clever enough to start this thread in the 'Wishlist' forum and not in the more appropriate 'Documentation' forum Wink

Humphy, dumphy doo,

just had a look at the Wiki (with plans afoot) I clicked on 'more screenshots', right at the top and got the old HTTP 404 message...

Not looking great for more screenshots!

Blader_se let me have access :p

Anyway, as it's quite obvious, you'll have a lot of people watching you, and ready to 'help out'!!!

Code:
How many guitarists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Two.  One to do it, and the other to sit back, take a drag of his cigarette, a sip of his beer and say, "...I could have done that..."

Of course this is going to stand in for GB-PVR enthusiasts too.

The one problem I see, but please don't let me deter you, is that there is no easy one way to install GB-PVR. There is no one, best source for xmltv data. There is no one best video driver, or codec etc..

Of course a single step by step would be a great jumping-off point for other pages detailing the many, many possibilities...

And yes, DEFAULTS are absolutely the way to go. A new user will get much quicker, succinct help, if he sticks to the basics, rather than jumping in and trying every bell and whistle out there...
