It really sounds like you're device isnt delivering data, or not complete/good data, resulting in broken live tv and empty recordings.

Certainly I was impatient this morning. I did not run the whole scan, just the QAM. It gave me a list of channels whose numbering did not corresond to what I thought would be my channel numbers. So I haven't been able to check out every channel that it found (knowing that there's only 5 that I can see anyway)

My gut is telling me that my card is functioning much better after I got it out of the ASUS box

<BDASubmitTuningRequestTwiceOnRecord>true</BDASubmitTuningRequestTwiceOnRecord>

etc etc
I'm pretty sure all the "BDASubmitTuningTwice..." settings are now defaulted to true on new installs and I think it was mentioned in a survival thread before sub changed the defaults. The "BDACheckSignalStatusDuringRecord" I found through much trial and error (and sub probably mentioned it) when he was working on adding QAM support to the VistaView tuner which sometimes took a little too long to lock into the signal and start sending data. I don't know if I ever mentioned it in a thread. That setting (as far as I can tell) extends the recording timeout just enough for the tuner to lock and start sending data. Oversimplification but that's the end result.

How would someone scan the QAM and see what's become encrypted and clear (even temporarily) in a faster,

'oh look there's something new' wanna watch a movie' way, rather than,

'honey, you don't mind I take the PVR down for an hour to look for new channels, do you?'
There is supposed to be an * next to clear channels in the scan but that feature is broken at the moment.

That's the scan IN GB-PVR?

Yeah. Under the Preview window in channel mapping next to the channel name (and also saved in the scan.cache files).

BTW, can you show me to the start of your threads regarding your QAM tool. I susect that after understanding what it is, and why it exists, I'll be writing a page for that too :p

Just an update.

Looks like the reason I was having at least some trouble was my cable provider had just turned off almost all the clear QAM channels that I was expecting to exist, and was trying.

I now have four channels. three of them are Yule Logs burning. Looks like a TV really has replaced the fireplace...

One channel is HD and I'm able to watch liveTV and record. There isn't any jerkiness while viewing either. Looks like I have spent 125 dollars on a HD fireplace.

Oh there is one more channel. Just as I start watching, there's what look like a GB-PVR pop up that tells me that the channel is encrypted, and a signal strength. What's that?

Sounds like an encrypted channels. It'll show you this popup if it is an encrypted channel (unwatchable).

Except it looks good and is watchable for about five secons, then the popup pops over top of the good clean picture/audio.

I also have no problem previewing that channel in the scanning window. And I can record a whole show and not get that popup...
