Give this patch a go. It'll hopefully fix an issue that can cause this on digital tuners (related to handle numbers being reused).

Thanks Martin. I don't think I'm seeing that exact behaviour here, but I'll check for it. It seems this problem manifests a little differently for different users, and not at all for some. It probably depends on various configuration details like how many tuners, what type, channel configuration, etc. Hopefully sub will be able to spot the error(s) in the code and solve this all before too long.
edit: oh, looky there, sub has gone and spotted the errors in the code and issued a patch while I was typing! hooray!

waiting 15 minutes for a recording to finish so I can put in that patch has never seemed so long as now....
update: no luck restarting recording service after patch, complained about tcp port being already in use; rebooting....

My problems are very easy to reproduce, and are on my analog tuners unfortunately that last one didn't help.

so far so good. I repeated the test procedure I did in the original post, and all is well.
I have a scheduled recording starting in 10 minutes; I will leave live TV running and see how it fairs when the recording starts (per post 14). sub, I think 1.5.28 + a few patches is the bee's knees, the mutt's nutts, the cat's meow, a few other expressions I can't think of right now...

sorry Martin, I have no analog tuners actually in use, so I guess my jubilation doesn't extend to your situation.

LiveTV still died when the recording started at 10:30pm. I'm guessing it must be related to the same issue, just a further fix needed.

The recording that killed Live TV is again running on forever. Interestingly, when it starts the next recording at 23:00, it also still thinks LiveTV is running and goes to look for an alternate tuner, but I never restarted LiveTV after it ended at 22:30.

That is what I suspected would happen, when I said restarting the service once wasn't enough. We are seeing the same thing. Martin

I didn't restart the recording service between the two shows, those were back to back recordings; the next recording after that at 23:30 proceeded normally with no mention of live tv. The 22:30 and 23:00 recordings were still running though, so I did restart the recording service to stop those sometime after midnight. I had to stop and restart twice though before I got a usable system.
