I had slow start up on the HDPVR (20 not 45 seconds) which was resolved when I used the hostname instead of IP address in the client box. For the share it didn't matter.
I disabled the firewall on both client and the server but the problem persists: attempting to play Live TV on the client takes about 60 seconds for the sound and video to appear, it displays for about 5 - 10 seconds then the error message pops up.
I can get a steady Live TV stream only by repeating this process multiple times ( around 3 to 5 times).
Question: Is there some buffering that takes place for client Live TV streaming? Maybe that's why Live TV displays for a few seconds before the error message pops up and maybe that's why it takes multiple tries before a steady stream is achieved.
Also, does it matter if the network is 100mbps instead of 1gbps? My network is 1gbps but the server IS connected to a 100mbps switch which limits its bandwidth.

Thanks!
Even HD rarely uses more than 18 mbps.

Yes I can play recordings and Blu-ray movies fine on the client, although I do not use NPVR for those. I use a separate software media player ( e.g., media player classic) with a different renderer.
I only use NPVR on the client machine to schedule recordings on the server and to stream live TV.
Based on your implication, I'll try a different renderer for NPVR and report what happens.
