Hey guys, this plugin is working for me when I use the default "audio only" processing, but when I try to enable video and audio processing, vlc starts and quits immediately. I ran the command used in your batch from a cmd box with the "-quiet" switch removed, and this is the message I received:

Quote:Dumped content to vlc-help.txt file.
The command line options couldn't be loaded, check that they are valid.

Press the RETURN key to continue...

Pressing return then terminates vlc.exe

Am I following a previous post correctly, that in order to stop the temp file from growing, you have to hit kill vlc? I noticed that the picture seems streched vertically in widescreen movies, have I missed a setting somewhere? Thanks.Smile

720x480 overscan problem

It sounds like you have your MVP set to 16:9 mode, in which case the picture is actually squished horizontally, thus giving the movie the appearance of being stretched vertically. If you set your MVP to 4:3, the picture aspect will appear correct, but the sides of the picture will be cropped significantly.

As of yet, neither I nor anyone else that I'm aware of has found a solution to this problem other than simple re-sizing the picture (which of course involves a lengthy re-encoding process, hence my desire to do it "on the fly" with XDVD, which isn't working so far). 656 or 672 pixel width seems to work best for me. 640 leaves a dark bar on the left side of the screen (the MVP output always seems to be off-center, shifted to the right).

Basically, I've been trying to figure out how to play DVDs on my MVP ever since I've had it (over a year now) and have yet to find a good solution. Your choices basically boil down to:

1) View in 16:9 mode and see (almost) all of the picture, albeit vertically stretched.
2) View in 4:3 mode and get a very excellent picture that fills most of the screen, but is heavily cropped on each side.
3) rip and re-encode into an MVP playable format with a smaller horizontal resolution.

My personal belief is that the MVPs ultimate limitation for output is the height. It can't play any video with a vertical resolution greater than 480, and it always letterboxes content to be exactly 480 height, so in any video with an aspect of greater than 1.33, the sides of the video will simply run into overscan. I base this theory on the fact that my MVP simply will not play files with a 720x540 resolution.

I might have posted this twice. Sorry if it already has been answered.

The VLC command line to transcode the DVD folder creates an mpg which, if played on WMP or most players, shows a video length of about 14 minutes or so, instead of the actual length of the source DVD. This makes it unplayable on the MVP as you cannot FF or Rew or jump to a frame.

May be is my setup, but if anyone else knows of a workaround, please let me know.

Yes, this is one of the drawbacks of XDVD. You should be able to pause and resume on the MVP, but fast forwarding and rewinding will result in very unpredictable behavior. So unless you plan on watching from the beginning, you're kinda screwed. If you need to be able to FF/RW, the best option is to choose "Transcode" instead of "Play" and then play back the transcoded file.

Yes. I do use transcode. I thought that "PLAY" only worked on the Server's PC, not on the MVP.

So, can I click on play on the MVP and just start watching ?

I tried that and nothing happened on my MVP. The only way that it works is to hit "Transcode", wait about 3 minutes, go back to the main manu, select videos and start playing "dvd.mpg". If by any chance, that dvd.mpg file is 0 bytes in size, the MVP will freeze and I have to do a full power down on it.

I give the option from mr Kauffman a try but get an error message:

Unable to open 'dvdsimple://i:"@1 :dvdnav-caching=7000 --sout-ffmpeg-strict 1 -I dummy --one-instance --audio-track 0 --sub-track 3 VLC:quit'

Anyone have try this? Also is there an option so you dont have to klik everytime on OK?

I'm not happy with the mpg files created with VLC. I'd like to try mencoder as the transcoder in place of VLC (xDVD uses VLC as the default). Can anyone post replacement batch files needed to use mencoder rather than VLC?

Thanks.

FWIW, the problems I had (jerky picture and pixelation), was cured when I rolled back to version 0.8.5 of VLC (from 0.8.6). It appears that thay made a change that effected how VLC deals with mpeg timelines when they produced 0.8.6. See the fourth post down on this thread.
