There's two points here, and I think that bgowland nailed it, the wiki is for documentation and the forums for support

Supporting my stuff I run the gamut, and I think restructuring it further will make it overly complicated: What I have now.

mpvmc & mpvmcx2 sub-forums - I believe that one MVP forums was good enough, half the posts still go in the general forum anyway. MVP/PCH stuff makes it into the main forum all the time too because sub doesn't often respond here.

universe, webradio and mb2 - Just added support to existing forums, creating new sub-forums would have been a complete waste of effort, based on the volume

networkrecorder, searchlite - general plugin forum works for me, GBPVR support is dead who cares if the odd message might get in there

imagegrablite - so far only the announcement thread, the blog-like support isn't bad. works surprisingly well for high volume too like Netflix Viewer too, but it makes actual announcement's less efficient.

If I had to do these one way, I'd focus more on the wiki to start and then just allow generic posts in "plugins/skins/utilities" and the MVP forum. Regardless of my support approach, separated or not, most posts go into the post blog-style that announces a new version anyway.

A good example of what I would want to avoid happened here. Dividing the documentation forum simply created two useless forums.

Hi Martin, I cannot disagree more with you here than I have ever done!

bgowland did nail it. We know that the wiki is for documentation and that the forums are for support.

But we are not talking about the wiki here, we are talking about support on the forum. And there are more than 2 points alone about that.

Really, like dividing the GB-PVR (legacy) and NextPVR forum did? So in fact what you are saying is that the main forum became useless once it was separated out from GB-PVR to NextPVR?

And no doubt like creating a new wiki for NextPVR did? Useless?

Believe it or not I am trying to find a way through here that helps everybody.

cheers

Useless in the sense that there is no need to worry about GB-PVR forum support for plugins, skins, dox (including the wiki), or utilities anymore. There are still people that need to talk about GB-PVR and it needs to be separate.

When a new NPVR Plugins, skins, and utilities sub-forums is created I certainly will not bother separating any of my plugins.

I hope you didn't take negatively. There is nothing I hate more than going to any forum and seeing a sub-forum with 5 or 10 posts over a few years. Even those posts can be like a dog's breakfast.

Hi Martin, if that was for me, not in the slightest taken negatively, Taken very positively Big Grin

All these thoughts going into the 'boil pot'.

Who knows anyway, nothing may come of it!

But all comments still up for grabs if anyone else ventures forth again.

Dear all,

in between nappy changes, burping and singing I got a chance to actually read through this thread Big Grin

I would suggest an initial start for the plugin/utility/skin section of the forum would be to separate out what is GB-PVR and what is for NextPVR.

I also realise that there will be some resistance to this, if resistance wins I will keep fighting, as an alternative to the resistance I meet is my resistance. There are no true winners in a resistance battle, we all lose.

Firstly my post can serve as a bump!

So my first suggestion would be much along the lines of the GB-PVR (legacy thread) and also how we set up the documentation thread that specified NextPVR doc and GB-PVR doc....

cheers

Its not clear what changes are required. I think we all agreed the old crap needs to be shuffled off to a 'GBPVR (Legacy)' forum, but beyond that that there didnt seem to be any consensus.

I'll also live within practical limits of what forum software allows me to easily. ie, I have no magic way to tell it to move GBPVR posts to somewhere else, and not going manually move the thousands of threads that are there. This probably means creating a new 'Add-ons (3rd party plugins, utilities and skins)' top level forum, then moving the exist 'plugins and skins' forum to be under the new add-ons forum, and rename it to 'GBPVR (Legacy)', then will have to try start fresh for new plugin stuff, and move some of the more obvious NPVR plugin stuff out of the old legacy content.

Is all the new stuff going into directly into the top level of the new 'add-ons' forum, or are we creating new subforums for each plugin, or do we want create subforums for 'nextpvr skins', 'nextpvr plugins' and 'nextpvr utilities'. If the latter, will content be created in the root of those subforums, or will it then have other subforums for each plugin etc?

Jaggy Wrote:I'm all for a change for the Plugin-Skins sub forum but PLEASE not like it has been done for this Documentation forum, the extra layer down to get into & out of the current (NextPVR) messages is a right royal PITA!!
I hear you. It is very sucky. It might be too messy to have all plugin/skin/utility support posts being in the top level of the new top-level 'add-ons' forums though?

I'm quite happy to pushing all the old stuff down a level to a nested in 'GBPVR (Legacy)' forum though ('out of sight, out of mind' and all that...)

No, for now, I am simply suggesting that at the 2nd level of the Plugin/Skin support part of the forum that we could head to deliniate?

I totally understand your reasons for keeping the forum whole. I'm just looking for work arounds that keep your legacy intact but also a way forward Big Grin
