Until now I would say take the BlueMCE2 skin, which has great graphics. Indeed, a neater font would be nice.
But... now I have seen some screens of Dottore's new skin I can hardly wait until it is finished Big Grin
But I can imagine that some might prefer a lighter skin above such a dark skin.

I agree, Looks pretty cool.

Since your talking about a rebulid on the defalut skin I'll throw in my 2 cents (which is all its really worth).

Something I would like to see on the main menu is a few "always" present buttons. Not in the list format either. A couple of buttons down in the corner that remain on the menu screen regardless of which submenu you might be in. They could appear as icon's only no text until selected. Things like a settings menu, and some other confgurable buttons like weather or live TV.
And I do like the idea of submenus. I Currently have my GBPvr set up like this:

--LiveTV
--Guide
--Xrecord
--My Videos
--[ Plugins ]
+--------My Pictures
+--------Weather
+--------Weather

I use brackets [] to indicate a submenu. It would be nice for a submenu button to look different from a plugin or core component button.
GBPVR Server:
AMD Sempron 3300+, 1gb DDR, 100, 200 & 500gb HDDs, DVD -/+RW PVR150 RETAIL, PVR150MCE.
GBPVR 1.0.16, SKIN'S = Default Blue, PLUGIN'S = None

I second both of these! Now we're up to 4¢!

I'm going to do the bracked thing right now on mine. And I think that a "..." on the end for a sub menu might work also.

I haven't ever tried to make a skin, and I don't pretend to know how, but can a .mpeg file be triggered to play directly from a menu and upon completion go straight to another menu? Kind of like a transition.

the problem with dottore's skin is that it looks too much like the mediaportal ones (if you are going for originality) the bottom reflection part anyway. yeah its a completely different colour, but it still reminds me of media portal. ( i do like the task images however Smile, but i dont like the white lines on the background, which wouldnt really turn up on a tv output probably (low resolution and all)).

you're right, but i think, it looks more like centerstage: http://centerstageproject.com
just for the reflection. i haven't had a better idea yet. maybe a distant shadow....

i haven't tested on a tv but i think the fine lines in the background would just disappear and leave a blank background. have to try it out...

then, another idea: since we can show task-images on the main menu (maybe in the future even if not selected), wouldn't it be nice to have a representation of the actual plugin-state? for example: the weather-taskimage would display the actual weather, like va-panel does...

This was part of my original intention. The plugin developers can already do this if they want, but I think everyone just returns the same image each time.
