Most people only use a few minutes padding, but depends on how often your broadcasters run off schedule. If they're nearly always on schedule, then just use a couple of minutes, and make sure your clock is set correctly.

Sub,
You seem the right person to ask this question to. I would like to transfer one of my VHS tapes onto DVD. The only problem is Windows Movie Maker is the only progam I have to import my Tape into my PC. From what I see it will only import as a wmv file. How much quality will I lose if I want to code back to DVD such as Vob's / Mpeg 2. I know this is off the topic of GB-PVR but I figured you could give me a quick answer since you know all about Video.

Sorry, I dont have answer for this. I'm sure if you use the forum search feature though you'll find comments from others that have done it in the past.

You might find this useful as it gives pros and cons of different software

Also, you can use a hack to get GBPVR to do this: see here

I'd steer clear of capturing to WMV then transcoding back to mpeg - the quality won't be great

I agree about the wmv conversion.... I've been using Windows Movie Maker and saving as an AVI but I'm having issues conveting to Mpeg 2 for DVD. The Video and Audio are out of sync. I've tried several things to fix this but can't seem to find the issue. What I need to do is code directly to Mpeg 2 like GB-PVR does then I won't have this issue. This is what I tried to solve the sync issus.

I read The second link about making GB-PVR read from RCA and it sounds interesting. I tried it and things seems to work great. Its nice to record directly to Mpeg 2. I just need some editing software that will let me do this. Currently I use Nero to edit out the commercals then burn to dvd but as for home movies Windows Movie Maker gives me sync issues as I stated above. I would like to use Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 but because my Processor doesn't support SSE2 I can't use it. AMD started giving the AMD Opteron and Athlon 64 support but my Athlon XP 2800+ doesn't support it. Athlon Xp's only support SSE not the second generation.
