I have so far been using this (http://www.raspbmc.com/wiki/user/windows-installation/) very simpel install process for Raspbmc. However, I cannot seem to get my MCE remote to work properly so I will set up another SD card with Openelec.

I had a problem with my mce remote in Raspbmc also. I got double key presses in most of the file browser windows. So far, I haven't seen the problem with my openelec install. Of course, that's one of the nice things about the pi, you can have a couple sd cards with different setups and switch back in just a few minutes.

Yepp, that was the exact problem I had. I just got Openelec up an running and although it is not as smooth as I thought Raspbmc was I can at least use the remote.

i recommend buying a motorola nxybird remote from pulse-eight. its really cool, has IR to learn your tv remote + rf for xbmc, so can hide your pi behind your tv and remote works without line of sight. works fine in raspbmc, openelec. its designed for xbmc. and has a keyboard on the back which is helpful when you want to search for a movie or need to input username/passwords/text entry.

i have 3 of these, love em.

Raspbmc has an installer here: http://www.raspbmc.com/wiki/user/windows-installation/

You can also just download the image and use a program like win32diskimager to install the installer image to the SD.

Also in rapbmc config you can have it download the nightlies rather easily.

you might also want to turn off automatic updates in raspbmc settings addon in xbmc.

the last 3 automatic updates have had serious issues and broken many peoples setup, which required a reflash.

so its better to turn this off, and just follow the blog, when you see a release, check the comments first. and just keep checking until you see the issue(s) have been fixed.

upnp is broken in the current "update" and some people are still getting the reboot loop

OK folks, this all sounds very Sinclair ZX80 ish (no I never bought one of those either) so I have to ask.
Apart form the challenge, and the fact it's cheap, and small, can you convince me WHY I would want a raspberry Pi with XBMC to use with NPVR, rather than use my PC?

Read the start guide ...

Actually, its not much of a challenge, very few setups I have tried have been so easy to configure. And as far as other arguments to WHY, small an cheap should be enought shouldn't it Smile ...and it is silent too.

you should also take into account that the NPVR addon is still on its first release, I see a great potential in this but I think that until some other basic functionality has been added this setup will run in parallell with my NMTs.

the reasons why the pi interest me so much are
# cheap
# silent
# low powered
# I can hide it behind my tv, use the motorola xbmc remote via RF
# my tv can power it via its usb ports

so basically, i want to stick it to the back of my tv (so its not seen) power it from my tv (so no huge adapter, or more ugly wires) fast boot up (wish this was faster though, openelec is fastest boot up using a htpc not a pi)

Based on what I have read I think it's more a new way of accessing NextPVR as opposed to replacing anything except maybe an MVP. I don't consider it particularly cheap or even a bargain especially seeing things like this http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/AddToC...31-265%7c1 I did order two RPi's to know or myself. Life is certainly better without the Windows tax.
