Even comes with 2 IR blasters, in case there's something a bit more complex to achieve (or for future use).

Are you referring to this

I would of linked to newegg but the version on their web site is lower.

So it sounds like the jp1 remotes are the cheaper way of going. But I am reading that the idc connector for a jp1 cable is not that easy to come by.

So what are some recommendations ? for a jp1 cable and for a jp1 remote ?
For JP1 info, I'd just look around here. http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/index.php
Most of the newer remotes are JP1.2 and have the headers already. The ones that don't probably need the eeprom also as they are older versions. The new ones use flash memory already present in the CPU. I got my first cable parts from old TV chassis. The pin connectors from circuit boards (junk VCR maybe?) and the female connector from old audio cables supplied with CDROM drives. Some people cut up old floppy drive cables. All the parts are available new for pennies from mail order suppliers but the market place at JP1 has them available if you don't want to build your own. (shipping will cost more than the parts needed for several cables)

This is the ms remote at newegg.
don't know about versions, but it looks like the one I got few months ago.
also, you can get MS Remote Keyboard that will work with this receiver (was now on sale for 30-something $ here).

Like I said - for a lower budget, if you don't look for anything fancy, but a solid solution - the MS remote gives a cool deal - BTW the build quality and the button feel of the MS remote is 10x better than the Hauppauge 45 I have.

I don't know about jp1 or the MX-500, so I can't recommend there (BTW, Jp1 or not - what would be the IR receiver? the sluggish Hauppauge?).

* MCE Remote + Keyboard
* Win XP SP2 / GBPVR [Latest version. always]
* Pioneer HDTV via VGA (1360x768)
* MS Remote Keyboard
* Logitech Harmony 880 [via MS Remote Control Reciever]

How do you teach the MS remote your TV power and volume commands? Can the remote itself learn them or is it via the IR blaster? Do you mean the actual hand held remote, the thing with the buttons on it? I was not aware that it was teachable. Or am I misunderstanding something here? :confused:

Yup newegg has model A9O-00007, while buy.com has A9O-00009. Not sure how imortant that is.

I've looked at all the web sites that microsoft has listed as retail outlets for the remote and none of them have it.

You understood perfectly. Both the MS Remote control (yes, the handheld itself) and the MS Remote Keyboard are capable of learning (only 3 buttons! [TV Power Toggle], [Vol+], [Vol-]).

See "Using the Remote Control Learning Functionality" in http://oem.microsoft.com/static/Worldwid...Manual.pdf

How did you miss this feature until now? didn't you see there was a OnOff button for the TV and wondered what it's for? Smile
