Love the update whurlston, but being the curios person I am I was scrolling thru all the genres to see what was listed. As I got to "Kid's Anime", Right after "Karate", I got this exception. The genre titel would change but the movies listed
did not. Once I got past the "Kid's...." portion it continued to work. I'm thinking it has something to do with the apostrophe in the name. That's just from my very limited programming experience.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Ah, right you are. The attached patch should fix it.

First of all, great work Whurlston. Netflix is a service that we use quite a bit and this version is certainly shaping up to make it very easy to use from our PVR. I'm sure it can only get better. I'd like to throw my 2 cents in with a couple of suggestions that hopefully others find useful as well. (Forgive me if they have already been suggested elsewhere, I just haven't run across them yet.)

1) Would it make sense to start with the Genre list, instead of the move list? This way it would be easier and faster to scroll through a whole list of genre's vs. going through them one by one. Once the Genre is selected you populate the list with the movies in that genre. You can then jump back to the genre list with one push of the Back/Esc button(Key).

2) Add button functionality to allow for quick moving through the lists:
For example: Use the number buttons on the remote to toggle to the first movie alphabetically associated with the number. Since the 2 is associated to ABC, the first press moves to first move starting with the number 2, 2nd press to A movies, then third press to B movies and so on. This makes it easy to jump down a long list to find a movie you may know the name of. Use this functionality in both Genre as well as Movie lists.

3) Can we have buttons mapped to move a page up or down at a time? Maybe map the Channel Up/Down buttons to this function?

Thanks in advance.

I considered starting the list with the genres as selectable items but I decided against it due to 1) personal preference and 2) I wanted to keep it as close to the NPVR base libraries as possible. By using the genre categories the way that I am, it somewhat mimics the Recordings screen.

This should actually be already available. Key presses need to be within 2 or 3 seconds of each other or it resets. Pressing "#" will move to the start of the list. Number keys work as phone keys (as in your example). And it will also accept the actual letter keys if using a keyboard.

PageUp and PageDown will already do this. I'll add the +/- keys for anyone that has their channel up/down mapped to them.

Thanks for the quick response and the answers on items 2 and 3 I posted. I see that 2 is working as expected (not sure why this was a problem for me before, maybe I didn't even test it right).

As for my first suggestion, maybe there are some other ideas floating to make the traversing of genre's easier and less time consuming. Even wittling it down to only those genre's one wants to see could end up with a cumbersome list to navigate. Just trying to see how we can keep the useability high.

One additional suggestion that might help is if we could have the left and right arrow keys mapped to flip the genre's, instead of the the SkipLeft and SkipRight buttons. This would be more intuitive and again meets your point about keeping the look and feel the same as the Recordings menu.

The reason for using SkipLeft and SkipRight is because if you are in Covers View mode, Left and Right navigate the list. Using the skip keys was the closest thing I could think of. The Recordings screen doesn't have a Covers View so it's not an issue there.

I still get this message. The genre title now sas "Kids' Anime" instead of "Kid's Anime"

Apparently I posted the wrong build. Unfortunately, I can't post a fix for it at this time but give me about an hour or so.

After thinking about this some more, I think I have an idea. What if I made it respond to the phone key entries? The existing phone key entries would still work to navigate the list but if you pressed the "*" key it would navigate the Genres instead.

5-5-5 would navigate to the first title starting with "K"
*-5-5-5 would navigate to the first Genre starting with "K"

Good idea. That would make dealing with a large number of Genres a little easier.

Ooh, also, I just thought of this... you use the left and right skip buttons to move among Genres one at a time... how about using the ffwd/rewind buttons to move 5 or 10 at a time, or perhaps alphabetically like if you're currently at All Movies and you hit ffwd it goes to the first genre starting with B, then the first starting with C, and so on.

This would somewhat mimic the behavior of NPVR in the TV guide and LiveTV, except that NPVR uses the ffwd/rewind for the smaller skips, and the skip buttons for the bigger skips. So if you do implement this it would probably make more sense for the ffwd/rewind to move one at a time and then the skip buttons move by larger amounts.
