The first thing a Canadian does when faced with new work processing software is enter a word like "humour" to see if the spell check program is set up correctly. Canadian English spelling is a combination of the spelling from England and the spelling used in the United States. I saw a show on the history channel that explained it. When the English loyalists came to Canada following the American revolution, many became teachers. However the lack of interaction with England in the previous years had already started the changes in spelling. When the government of the day in Canada, who had come directly from England, found out that their children were being taught to spell humour as "humor", etc., a law was created (not one I could find in the current body of law) to dictate how the spelling of certain words was to be done. The words that Canadians spell in the American way are likely the words that were missed when this law was created.

At work, I notice that no matter how often I set the default language to Canadian English, something will kick in on a regular basis and reset it to US English. In Open Office, I haven't figured out how to get a Canadian English spellchecker. Very annoying!

You have one user here from Israel. Two actually, since I heard about GBPVR from a friend of a friend who recommended it wholeheartedly.

If anyone's interested in the technical details, we use the PAL broadcast system here (being an ex British mandate of course) . That's a resolution of 720x576 at 25fps.

Personal experience (should anyone need help in setting anything up):
  • I use TUL ATI Theatre 550 internal PCI capture card
  • Using the internal tuner on the ATI card with an RF cable connected to the satellite receiver
  • IR Blaster (USB-UIRT) is used to change channels on my satellite receiver
  • TVXB used to retrieve the Israeli TV listing into TVXML format.
  • I also sometimes use the S-Video input to capture from the "Yes Max" (Israel satellite version of TIVO)

Also been dabbling with Plextor ConvertX™ PX-M402U external USB capture device with S-Video input. Capture quality seems to be less than that of the ATI, but it has the big advantages of hardware capturing directly to divx, and support for 1/2D1 resolution (also known as CVD), i.e. 352x576 . It's very annoying that the ATI cannot support that resolution (despite theoretical specification).

So, hope this helps or interests anyone, and you're welcome to ask questios (especially fellow Israelis).

Just think how long the English, Canadians, Australians, etc. have been spelling those words that way.

Luckly the Americans came along and were finally able to correct the spelling on all those words. Smile

Apparently it wasn't really for religous reasons that the pilgrims left to come to America. It was the spelling they couldn't stand that drove them to the US. I'll put that on Wikipedia.

There's an old joke along the lines that the Canadian tragedy was we were supposed to get British culture, French food, and American technology and instead we ended up with British food, French technology and American culture.

American Culture ???? come on.... America is "only" like what... 400 and a bit years old, you can't call that a culture. Wink

This will get some discussion going........
