First things first - I hear you loud and clear. I've had periods that I've been addicted and periods that I just didn't follow. I only installed 09612 about 2 weeks ago. 095 was fine, so I didn't even consider changing it...

The only thing that really bothers me about what you wrote is "why is the jet engine in the corner so loud?".
I have 2 disks, and a total of 7 fans in the system (not kidding), and still it's barely audible.
What's the secret? Replaced almost all of my fans with Akasa Amber series, or Thermaltake silent fans, and padded the beast with Akasa noise-filter pads.
Here's an inventory:

1. Power supply is a Thermaltake 430W with 12cm fan.
   
2. Case exhaust fan is an Akasa Amber series 12cm.
   
3. Case front intake is an Akasa Amber 8cm.
   
4. Case side intake is an Akasa Amber 8cm.
   
5. I have a Thermaltake I-Cage for the two disks. It has a 12cm silent fan.
   
6. CPU cooler is a Zalman CNPS-7000AlCu (9.2cm)
   
7. Northbridge fan is a measly 4cm fan (this is the main noise maker - goes up to 7000 RPM).

My system is stable and my wife uses it everyday...now I find myself wandering around the GBPVR UI aimlessly. Hundreds of shows recorded, but still nothing to watch.

My life is meaningless!!!

My HTPC "Old" computer sits about 8ft away. The main noise culprit is the Power supply fan. I don't believe the case fan and cpu fan are all that noisy. The old "Gag-Stop" of the PS fan quiets it down a bunch. I tore apart the Power supply and put a new elcheapo 80mm fan in it in case the exsisting fan was wearing out. That obviously wasn't the issue. The power supply will not take a 120mm, which are quieter.

The CD drive is also something fierce when there is a disk in it. This is a "stock" el-cheapo build computer that was in my basement for gaming and such. Noise was not an issue several years ago.

New "keep it quiet" stuff costs $$ that I am unfortunately in short supply lately.

If you are using a PC that was built for low noise operation then that is apples and oranges.
