I think that there was a discussion about a way how timeshift should work, but I can't find the thread. So will start new one.
1) I don't like the idea of use of EPG as a base for timeshift function. It's not convenient, sometimes even useless, when TV broadcast is delayed for any reason. As it is now, according to EPG new programme started and new file is open, but in real life the previous one didn't finish. Files don't match programmes.
Moreover, if you decide to record in timeshift mode, your programme will be divided, or even not fully recorded
Wouldn't it be better to have an option: EPG as a base or configurable buffer length?
2) Lest's consider situation when you don't have EPG for particular channel. The buffer length is 1 hour then. After 1st hour new temporary file is open and you can not jump between old and new one. That's limitation....
The only one good sentence I can tell about PowerCinema is its timeshift function. It's almost perfect. So, comparing to PowerCinema solution: the timeshift buffer consists there of several short mpeg temporary files (sum of them = buffer length), and you can easily navigate throughout them. When new file is created, the oldest one is deleted.
3) Timeshift and recording: as it is now when you press record button in timeshift mode current buffer will not be deleted in the future by RecordingService. Again, it can be convenient when all is based on EPG. Going back to PowerCinema and its perfect timeshift mode. When you press record button watching timeshifted programm, the MPEG stream is rewritten from temporary to target file, starting exactly from the point where you are now. And the target file is closed when you press record next time. I don't remember all aspects, probably pause is allowed during timeshifted recording but back and forward are not allowed.
4) Live preview and recording -in current Gbpvr version timeshift mode starts. I think it is better idea to start writing to file using Medium profile as it is default one. When you decide to finish recording you should return to live preview and close the file, instead of continuing timeshift mode.
Anyway, I didn't change my opinion that Gbpvr is a great TV/PVR application :-)
