Hi Stefan,
I had been using a 6600 non-gt version for about the last 12 months and had been quite happy with 1080i playback. I bought a 7300GS (MSI 256MB version) out of curiosity when they first came out on a visit to Singapore back in Feb this year. It was a cheapish card with passive cooling that attracted me. I tested it with mpeg2 1080i HD playback using the nvidia decoders vmr9 etc and noticed some tearing and frame drops concluding it wasn't quite up to the task. The mpeg2 576i SD playback however was fine.
I have since read somewhere else over avsforums that the 7300GS only has a 64bit memory interface and did not have enough bandwidth for HD playback. The 7600GS and 7600GT are both have 128bit memory interface.
I have since moved onto a 7600GT (the gigabyte heatpipe version) and have been very happy with it's performance except for some slight diagonal noise banding the s-video output. Gigabyte has been coresponding with me about it but I'm yet to RMA the card.
