Athlon XP-M - Compatible with Athlon XP board?

I've seen many Athlon XP-M socket A CPUs on eBay recently that are seemingly identical to the older Athlon XP socket A CPUs. Does anyone know if XP-M CPUs will work in a Mobo designed for the Athlon XP? (I'm looking to upgrade the speed of my PVR without replacing the mobo.)

Yes I believe lots of people back in the Socket A era would buy XP-M cpus because they were very good overclockers

I have 2 xp-m procs in my dually below.

If your mobo has the ability to control the FSB and multi and vcore then you are good to go.

Both my rigs use XP-M 2500's. The main rig is at 2.4Ghz and the pvr machine at 2Ghz but importantly at 1.48V.

Even if your mobo can't it's ok. I control the multiplier on my xp-m's via software as my mobo cannot overclock (procs post at 800MHz! :eek:, but software brings them to 2GHz)

Like Spartan, I too have a XP-Mobile in my PVR.

That being said I don't have duals...

Not all mobo's allow changing the multi via software (clockgen etc). e.g. My nForce2 mobo's hang if you try and set the multi.

The challenge is probably finding any of those processors. I snatched up one late last year for my PVR box, as I recall, after searching several places. The mobo on that one can have the FSB and multiplier controlled by software.

I put two of them in my Tyan SMP mobo, using the socket jumpering technique since the BIOS couldn't help and software can't control it... so I got good with tweezers and a flashlight to drop those wires in the socket... I know I wouldn't mess with all of that again....).

Doing this nearly drove me to madness with my original (asus an8x vm-400) mobo so I swapped it for another nforce2 mobo only to find that, whilst it detected the xp-m correctly, it didn;t have multi selection.

so I swapped THAT mobo for an nf7-s, which I got for £10 with a (known) broken usb port..

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd post what happened with my dually running overclocked XP-Ms... it is going to become a Linux experimentation box as it is being replaced by my new core 2 that is overclocked. What a screamer! The benchmarks are between 300% and 400% faster in areas like disk, memory and multimedia throughput. Built in the Antec P180B case, it runs cooler and quieter! Amazing....

With some extra effort at making it quieter, this would be an awesome machine for recording in HD in a home theater setup. I guess we know that many forces are descending on the PVR market and without things like Cablecard interfaces exposed to GBPVR, the future for recording in HD is pretty grim right now it seems.... at least without all kinds of rigging to control a cable or satellite box, right?
