I have had my main pc running GBPVR for a couple months now and am very happy with it. I got my hands on a used PC that I could move my PVR-150 card to and use as a standalone PVR. The problem I have is the pc does not have an AGP slot. Does anyone have any recomendations for a PCI video card with either TV-out signal? Any difference noted between s-video and component output?

Thanks in advance for the help Smile

Ew. Just keep in mind that such configurations don't ooze PQ like an AGP based card. I wouldn't recommend using anything less than AGP 8x but that is just me.

I've been driving my 55" SD TV with a PCI (not-E) FX5200 card via the s-video output. Resolution is set to 640x480 and it looks pretty good, definitely watchable. Actually much better than I expected. Unless they were side-by-side I don't think you could tell the difference between it and the MVP. If I had an AGP slot, I'd definitely use it, tho...

I dont understand how a agp card could deliever better svideo out when compared to the same card but in pci form...

I'm using a volari v3xt 64mb pci card.... Anyone know how that compares to a nvidia card? The box says it supports hdtv out..so i would imagine its fine..

Yes I would prefer an AGP slot, but beggers can't be choosers. The pc has plenty of horsepower.

Does anyone use anything other than svideo to drive a TV? Any differences between ATI, nvidia, etc...

I just ordered a PCI 6200 fron newegg for $30 with shipping.
I have a spare e-machine that I upgraded to 1.1ghz celery & 384 MB ram & I plan on using it as a DVD / recording playback only PC.

to all those who cringed at the above. Smile

the PC was free, I had the ram & the celery cost $19. I don't need to record on this PC.
Just play back recordings & archived Xvid shows from a CD or DVD.
I can let people know how the card performs in about a week when I get time to set it up.
I also believe the purevideo decoder gives added benefits to a geforce 6200 so i'll see if I can demo it first to see if it makes a difference.

I've used different cards here & there.
I can say geforce2 & older cards is a toss up because the tv-out was handled by the manufacturer & quality was all over the board. so was ease in getting the TV-out to actually work. But on some I had a great picture.

for newer hardware i've used a radeon 7000 & an nvidia fx5200 & I couldn't tell the difference when it came to picture quality once I switched to high quality cables.

I have a 9550 with component output & that is better than both. The svideo out also seemed a little crisper. but I could of been imagining it.

I was reading up on my Volari V3XT its better than a 9200 worse than a 9250 on some things... My volari supports directx 9 and has a "cipher" chip or something..so for dvd and hdtv output its better...

I'm looking at your specs & I was wondering what type of CPU usage you see when playing DVD or higher quality recordings?

On A 750mhz Athlon with geforce fx5200 I was bouncing between %60 & %80 for DVD & Half DVD recordings but I would be in the 90's when it came to high bit rate 720x480 recordings.

I'm guessing i have something setup wrong...cause my cpu usage for gbpvr is goin between 80-90 percent...for live tv....well thats according to task manager...

I started playing around with differnt decoders.....less cpu..but it drops frames..then audio....
