Hi,

A little history...
I'm fairly new (7 months) to media center PCs, PC based PVRs and recently streaming media to my TV. A few weeks ago, after weeks of study on the subject of streaming media (audio, pictures and recorded TV) to my TV from my PC, I purchased a D-Link DSM-320. At the time it was cheaper than the MediaMVP and it was wireless... cool.

I'd already done a couple weeks of homework before the purchase and found from reading around that the included D-Link media server PC application was not the best choice and even prior to the DSM-320 arrival, I'd already experimented with a number of PC side media server applications and settled on TVersity as my media server of choice. They pretty much all worked the same but there were slight nuances that made TVersity my final choice. Note, GB-PVR was one media server I read about and eliminated without even trying because it seemed to be overkill for a simple media server and it needed a MediaMVP to truly shine.

When the DSM-320 arrived, I basically hooked it up, plugged it in and it configured itself and found the TVersity server and we were quickly listening to music and viewing family pictures from my PC hard drive and everything worked generally well.

When it came to viewing recorded video, my wife was at first amazed and thinking it was really cool to be able to watch video recorded by my PC PVR on the TV with no VCR to setup and tapes to juggle. However it wasn't long before she said how do 'I record a TV show with your new toy?'

Well you guessed it... I tried to explain the DSM-320 was a 'simple viewing device only device' and that the PVR application that recorded the shows was running on the PC and to record a show, she had to learn to use the PC application to set up recordings... bla bla bla... which is all she heard I'm sure.

At that point I was back to the drawing board researching PC based PVR software that was easy to use. Bottom line, none were really easy to use and none could be 'ran from the living room' where the TV and DSM-320 were at. After a week, I was beginning to think another media center PC in the living room was the only option...

That's when I (re)discovered GB-PVR. It along with a MediaMVP seemed to promise the complete (two way) interactive experience from the TV.

After downloading and trying GB-PVR for a few hours, the very next day I sent the DSM-320 back and ordered a MediaMVP.

Now to my question.

I've read a ton of useful and a bit disconcerting info on this forum and I want to try and avoid the dongle.bin issue and any other gotchas from the get go. Since I've not had the MediaMVP hardware in house yet but I do have GB-PVR installed and working on the PC with my PVR-150, what would be the proper approach to having the best success with the total setup?

What a great tool and wonderful community this is and thanks in advance for any advice.

I would just wait to arrives, then try it. Its not that complicated, and most people have no trouble getting it working.

One more question.

The wireless MediaMVP quick install guide at the Hauppauge website says,

1. connect the MVP to the TV.
2. load the included CD-ROM software on the PC. Note: I've already downloaded Hauppauges' latest MediaMVP software to be ready but I've not installed it yet.
3. turn on the MVP and follow the on TV setup.

My question is should I install the Hauppauge included CD-ROM software or the latest from their website or only use GB-PVR?

Thanks again.

Hi there... Welcome. I'm one of many that help document the wiki for GB-PVR. As I become more proficient with it, I lose the 'newby glaze' that gets us all from the beginning. So I'm asking what information are you NOT getting from the wiki when you search it...?

I really enjoy the community here on GB-PVR and would not like to to turn into one of those "Have you read the docs?" forums...

But seriously, have you? What's missing? I'd like to learn, so that I can help teach...

More specifically to your original issue, if you're going wireless with the MVP, you are already locked into a ceratin dongle to use... The one that comes with the hauppauge sofware!

Here's how I suggest what you do:

Install GB-PVR, configure it and make it work properly...

In services, disable the GB-PVR recording service.

Install the Hauppauge software. Hook up the MVP. Confirm proper working order. Can you play music, video, pictures using the Hauppauge user interface?

Next, disable the two Hauppauge services and reenable the GB-PVR service.

In GB-PVR's config, add a MVP server, and select a new dongle.bin...

Check it out. Have lots of patience. Your MVP may reboot a couple of times...

If it doesn't work quite right, you may try having GB-PVR using the exact same dongle.bin that comes with your Hauppauge software... Copy the dongle.bin from your Program Files/ Hauppage directory (don't remember the exact path) and copy it into program files/devnz/gbpvr/dongle folder. Rename the Hauppauge dongle.bin to something identifying... like HaupDongle.bin.

Back in GB-PVR config, select the HaupDongle.bin in the MVP tab. Cold boot the MVP. (Unplug power and wait two minutes) and see what happens....

Thanks zehd... that's exactly the answer (step by step procedure) I was looking for. Did I miss this in the wiki?

As to your other comments. From a "newby glaze" perspective, the GBPVR website, the wiki and this forum actually has TOO MUCH information and it can all be a bit overwhelming. And like any online community dealing with these type of products and third party software, most of the posts come from folks who are having problems which, from a newby perspective, can be a bit disconcerting at first. Even considering the seeming large number of problems reported, I took the plunge and switched from a DSM-320 to a MediaMVP because there's a large number of folks here, like you, that have a good undestanding of it all and are very willing to help us newbys.

From my continuing experience with this, I hope I can help too one day.

Thanks again

Not Quite. This last rambling was entirely on the spot. I just wanted to know if that's the type of page that you were looking for...

I know there should be even more, super easy, "go here, and then go there" pages... But boy has this wiki come a long way already...

BTW, of course there are more reports of bad things going wrong. Very few people log on when eveything is going good.

That's not to say there aren't plenty of people just hanging out, looking for ways to contribute....

Anyway, anything further, just shoot!
