Braklet Wrote:Tinkering doesn't scare me, but it all depends on what that entails. I wasted weeks trying to get nVidia drivers installed correctly under AMD64 Ubuntu, and finally abandoned MythTV plans for GB-PVR.

I'm in the market for an ATSC receiver card as an adjunct to my PVR-500. I was almost settled on an ATI TV Wonder 650 until the company pulled the plug within a week of release.

Following this thread has made me a little paranoid about ATI products.

Right now the AVerTVHD card catches my eye, but the ATSC card market is so slim in the US there aren't many options. At least most of the PCI cards are relatively cheap.

I didn't know that about ATI 650 - too bad sounded promsing. The Divco Fusion has caught my eye because I'd like to try QAM see if I can get HD feeds off cable. The KWORLD ATSC-110 also looks interesting - cheap and may support QAM according to a post I saw on Newegg.

Getting back to the topic at hand - I downloaded and installed the latest update and then manually entered all the channel info. Did it late last night - got picture and sound. Didn't get to play with it much - ran out of gas and headed to bed (I used to be able to stay up all night playing Civ - guess I'm getting old). I will try it some more tonight and see if everything syncs up. I will also try some recording and see how that works. Under 96.12 my HDTV Wonder worked great. Sub - does 96.12 support the new control panel for the Theater 550 Pro? I guess I assumed that it didn't which is why I upgraded GB-PVR.

Huh? I dont understand the question, but I dont recommend anybody uses v0.96.12. It an old unsupported verison.

GB-PVR doesnt know anything about a 550 Pro control panel - in any version.

ATI finally made available some of the higher capabilty of this card by this release. Before when setting up the capture source it didn't matter what you changed in the configuration for direct recording configuration - it only recorded at the medium setting. It appears to me that the control panel isn't something I can access directly (at least I can't find it) but that through whatever software is used with the card (like GB-PVR) I now have greater variability in what settings are available.

I understand that 96.12 is an old version. It's just that it worked for my HDTV Wonder, however I like the availibility of having higher quality settings for the Theater 550 Pro - I'm not sure 96.12 will be compatible and was hoping you might know. Guess not.

Nothing has changed in the 550 Pro support since it was added. It can set the video bitrate, but not the resolution or audio bitrate.

Ignoring the hassle of having to manually enter the tuning information with the ATI HDTV Wonder, do you still think the older version works better? If so, what exactly is better? I've not seen any reports of failed recordings with the new stuff in this thread.

Sub,
The only problem I still have on the ATSC cards is (and I know this sounds crazy) when I start timeshift recording with the mouse, it almost always fails with a reference error. If I start timeshifting, wait a second or two and hit ctrl s (from memory for timeshifting from the keyboard) it works fine. I have an ATI card that does this as well as another non-ATI card. I know this is really a tuning thread but since you asked the question how the new patches were working I threw it in here.

Reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

I had some problems with my pc lately and needed to move the ATSC card. Since then I have been unable to record/timeshift. It looksl ike I'm also haveing the click the pause button problem. I'm using astc5 patch. See my logs attached.

FYI, I did a reinstall of my bda drivers and viewing is just fine. The only issue seems to be recording again. Sad

Long time lurker and user of gbpvr, thanks for a great product.

Just curious about this thread, are the ATSC users getting their High Definition signals via cable...or is this all about the Over the Air signals?

Just wondering since I see some have mentioned about the Dvico cards and they seem capable to grab the unencrypted channels (the local channels) off of cable, and I was wondering if this discussion revolved around that.

I am not in a great position to get over-the-air signals due to extreme distance from any good transmitters (Fort Collins, CO, USA) and would rather pull from the cable if at all possible.

Anywho, thanks for the info.

Its all over the air at this stage. No digital cable.

Unfortunately the Microsoft BDA spec does not cover digital cable at this stage, so this is not possible. The dvico software that does this uses WDM drivers instead, with some private interface that is not available to third party apps like GB-PVR.

Hopefully Microsoft will be resolving this API short coming in the Vista builds of MCE. So, hopefully a fix early next year.

Ok, timeshifting is not working so long as I click the pause button from live TV. What is working is timeshifting from the recordings menu. If I view a show in progress then it does "timeshift" just fine.

Another very strange issue which I'm not able to put my finger on. Live TV is stutter free and my cpu is well below 100% with my nvidia decoder. The problem though is shows that are simply recording (not while watching tv) are now embeded with these "sticking" points. It's where it will be playing fine and the stream seems to freeze. For minutes at a time in some cases. I did a good reboot just to see if that was the case and it was less frequent. Considerably less freequent. I'm still troubleshooting this but if there are any ideas let me know.
