It's too bad this is written in CLR-assemblies-MSIL-breakmylanguageforaprofit-dotNet, because it looks like a good tool. I will never run dotNet.

Even the new M$ big-wig-to-be Izzie something-or-other's big directive is to work on smaller, lighter, less-complicated projects. Maybe that'll include scrapping dotCrap. What's it for, anyway? Am I really going to port my win app to Linux with some C#-to-Java converter? pleez. It's a too-little-too-late attempt to compete with Java. And do they really think I'm going to run interpreted code on my servers? Ha!

So, you all will respond with "You'll just get left behind, luddite man!". Yeah, right.

.Net makes developing applications a hell of a lot quicker than VC++ or even VB. I've used all three, and .Net is the clear winner. Take for example registry access. If I want to access the registry in VB I must write a module that calls the Win32 API. A fully functional module to achieve this is huge, and time consuming to write. In .Net you already have registry access, and the same can be achieved with a single line of code.

How about speed of applications? This was one of the main complaints with .Net 1.x applications. I cannot see any difference between .Net 2.0 apps and native Win32.

Some people are concerned about how .Net will slow down your computer even when no .Net apps are running. This is not the case. If you have an MCE2005 system, .Net 1.x will already be installed by default anyway and I wouldn't be suprised if the same holds true in Vista.

I argued the merits of .Net versus C to a member of another forum, who complained about software that I provided to them for free. This particular member had no clue about programming, but apparently .Net is evil. The only conclusion I came to is that they were a dimwit, and they proceded to prove this over several months. I'm not saying that you're a dimwit, but if you open your mind you may realise that .Net is not all that bad.

The bottom line, and what I told the other person, is that if you don't like what the program has been written in, don't use it, simple as that. In the case of my software it was the only one to do that job, so tough luck. In the case of GB-PVR, you will be losing out on an awful lot by using a competing package.

As for the porting to Linux argument - try that with a piece of software which heavily dependant upon DirectShow and I think you'll have plenty of fun whether it's in C or .Net. As such, making GB-PVR cross-platform would be a complete waste of time, and I suspect would require a complete re-write to get working on anything other than Windows. sub doesn't have that kind of time to waste.

It is obvious that you are not a mature (in more ways than one) developer.

If you don't know that Java and .Net operate in the same manner (both pre-compile to intermediate byte code and than are executed via the .Net Runtime or Java Runtime) then you need to go back to school.

Enough said.

I probably shouldn't feed the troll, but...

I've been writing software for almost 35 years and Java since it first came out and exclusively Java for the last few years. I have no love for Microsoft but, like it or not, I think .NET is winning out. Most of the new apps coming out seem to be .NET. Look at the want ads and see how many .NET jobs there are vs. Java. If I wasn't planning to retire in a couple years I'd probably jump on the .NET wagon as well (I have dabbled it in). Resistance is futile...

Actually, both .Net and Java have their places and niches. There are advantages to both, but my preference tends to lean toward java mainly because I end up working with a lot of server oriented applications that need to run on multiple platforms.

But to the point of the original message. Get over it. GBPVR is .NET and there is nothing wrong with that. Sub originally started it just so he could learn .NET the rest is icing on the cake.

Any issues I have had (which have been minor) had NOTHING to do with .Net at all. One was my fault and the other was a driver issue....

First post and your point is to piss off a lot of people, including the DEVELOPER??? There days that I wish I could install a "Stupid Filter" on my pc. Rolleyes
