The graphic from the TV is from Mediaportals MCE skin.
As you know it is GPL'ed and you should follow the gpl rules then.
so if you follow the GPL you can use it.

just to let you know, i got bored of that skin, its no longer getting made.

just so we are clear (im a newbie at releasing stuff, ive never had stuff worth releasing), what must i do to use some graphics. the GPL is long, just give me the jist.

i want to use three graphics from various media portal skins in a skin im making (media experience, will remove everything from dell, and maybe change the name). i want to use the CDImage.png,defaultvideobig.png from the metal media skin, and the defaultHardDiskBig.png from the crystalcenter skin, who must i contain for permissions and stuff for these?

cheers for the help, and sorry for releasing any unpermission images previously, remember they were just betas and i just needed people to test the code. it wont happen again.

cheers,
reven

I'm no lawyer, but since we're only talking about a user supplied "skin" made up of images and xml files, it's not really going to mean much at all. I think you need to include a copy of the GPL license agreement text file, acknowledge it's source and any changes you've made. If it was a plugin, you'd also be obliged to supply the source code to the plugin on request.

Maybe MrMario64 is confused and thinks that you're in some away affiliated with my company (the producer of GB-PVR), and this is part of GB-PVR. Thats like saying "I've got Window desktop wallpaper covered by GPL, so Microsoft must now Open Source windows..."

No, I'm not confused.
GPL is the total package, it doesn't limit itself to lines of code.
And it doesn't matter where you use it, it always applies.

For people using graphics you mainly need to add a readme file in the skin stating where you got the files including a link to us.

Thats the basic idea.
Nothing bad, just a bit of credit where credit is due.

enjoy.

Agreed, and the total package from reven's point of view is his skin, or his plugin, or whatever he is releasing - which is ultimately the only thing that Reven is in control of in this project. Remember, GB-PVR is a very different project to MediaPortal.

GB-PVR is a closed source application, and I provide interface to allow external third party developers to extend it to meet their needs. I place no restrictions in my license on what technology can be used, or what license the technology must covered by. This is the same as Adobe providing an interface for Photoshop which allows users to implement their own plugins. If a user chooses to implement a plugin that uses GPL code, this is no concern for Adobe.

I agree, give credit where credit is due, and recommend third party developers honor the license agreements of any components they use, whatever the license may be.

BTW reven, sorry for using your name in the examples.

np.

but for the my picutres/videos plugins, im releasing their images as a skin, not in my plugin.  so they cant force me to give me my code, since their images arent in my code, im not using them. my skin is using em. its just in the same place so people can easily get them, if this is a drama, ill split them up.

that right?

force me to give you my code, bugger off.

Reven if you write an application which relies on, or includes a GPL image, then I think you have to give up its source code.

I'm not sure about this, but I think raven is saying the skin is basically "data".

His plugin can use any skin, GPL or otherwise... So I don't think he would have to give the code away unless the GPL resource is compiled as part of the code...

I think only the skin must remain open source.

just my $0.02!

what if it uses by default a different skin which doesnt contain any gpl image, and the blue skin is just a user submitted alternative skin?

im going to release the source, i just dont like the idea of being forced to.
