Hey all,

I think I may have a hardware problem with my MVP, but I thought I would post here to see if maybe I have overlooked something.

Basically, the my MVP/GBPVR setup ceased to function over the last couple of days. This may or may not have had something to do with a power surge earlier in the week but we can not confirm that. (Everything was behind surge protectors but the timing roughly coincides.)

Symptoms are:

MVP does not connect to server - endlessly cycles between first two bars

MVP does not respond to remote power button

GBPVR functions properly on computer.

Solutions tried

Removing power cord from MVP
Re-installing MVP software
Replacing dongle

Any suggestions? Do I have a blown MVP?

It might worth checking if it runs with the original Hauppauge MVP software

I am taking this from another person on different list. It might help you in trouble shooting.

Dan L.

The following details come through testing and observing the unit under
various circumstances and may help you to solve a problem. The description
is based on the 5 blue bars that are sort of an indicator.

It takes long for the first blue bar to show up.
No link on the ethernet cable. Check wiring!
The first blue bar shows slowly then the second comes a bit later. The
process loops.
No DHCP server (and no Hauppage server either).
First 3 blue bars shown but then it stops.
DHCP server works but there is no TFTP server
The 3 bars boot sequence ar shown in a dizling fast fashion.
DHCP and TFTP servers work. But the boot file is unreadable.
The normal 5 bars sequence is working but then the screen goes black.

Sub: Would I need to uninstall GBPVR to find out if the MVP software works or not?

Thanks for the added info but there does not seem to be anything about cycling between 0-2 bars there.

Also, is there any reason other than hardware failure that the MVP unit would refuse to shut off?

I tried using the original MVP software but with now luck. I did not uninstall GBPVR before doing so though if that would change things.

You need to go into your list of Services running and disable one of the GBPVR service and the Hauppauge service. You cannot run both at the same time.

If the MVP is cycling between 0 and 2 blue blocks then its not getting an IP address from a DHCP server, or its getting an address already assigned to another unit.

The DHCP server is normally in your router, try a power cycle / reset on that, then plug in the MVP.

Do you have just the one MVP or more than one?
If more then pull the power cords on ALL of them. Don't plug any back in untill they are ALL out. This will force ALL MVPs to request new IP addresses from your DHCP server and removes the possibility of the same IP adress being assigned to two different MVPs.

Throughout all this keep your GBPVR server running so that when it gets its IP address it can boot from the TFTP server thats part of GBPVR.

Good Luck.

Try WMIDiag http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

It's worth a shot if you've tried everything else. It worked for me.

Contacting Servers......
You should also check your firewall program permission settings.

About the nonresponsive mediamvp............
Does the mediamvp's red led flashes at all? If not your batteries could be low or your remote may be worn out.

It works now. Turns out the power surge I mentioned did something to my router and after figuratively (and once or twice literally) kicking it around for awhile I got it set up to work right again! I also replaced every file and reinstalled, but nothing worked until I focused on the router. Thanks again.

Beer heading your way Sub... I would buy a round for the group but... uh... got to go! Big Grin
