Thanks Sub

I installed Directx9c and then did the quartz.dll patch from 9b. I get no OSD using VMR7 or Overlay.

Was that exerpt taken when GBPVR was running? I have been tinkering with different decoders and different renderers so it could be the logs are taken after i unsuccesfully tried VMR9 again (GBPVR never got past the splash screen with vmr9 enabled though??)

Anyone else had either OSD or vmr9 working on WHS?

It was from gbpvr.exe-native.log.

Just as an update to this issue - Ive reverted back to XP because of the OSD problems, when i tried to install the most recent Radeon 7.2 drivers for my 9200 i got the same 'VMR9 is not supported' error. Using the recommended Pre X300 drivers from ATI solved the problem and gives me excellent playback - something i wish id tried whilst using WHS!

The backup utility was an issue though, given that it would use a lot of resources (60-70% cpu) whilst backing up, and is only useful if its running when the other PC is switched on in the house, ie not overnight! If it runs in the evening it caused choppy playback!

Also there was no USB-UIRT support.

The automated backup will (if you install the client app) wakeup a PC from standby, back it up and shut itself back down again.

Also, I don't understand why people are trying to replace their media centre PCs with this. It's a server operating system, designed to offer networked storage and automated backup. It was never intended as a desktop/media centre OS.

In my setup it will fit in nicely as i use MVPs for viewing recordings. So it'll just sit there recording stuff, backing stuff up and keeping copies of all my vital files.

As for not having local access to your files, take a look at the D drive. I have set up a share called "Recordings", the path to it is "D:\shares\Recordings".

I haven't actually got around to trying out GBPVR on it yet, struggling to find the time at the moment.

Anyway, just my opinions. No offence intended to anyone!

I was curious more than anything, my thoughts being that my Media Centre PC on on 24/7, so why not use it like a server system too.

I didnt expect it to be without problems running GBPVR, but if you dont try you never know!

I dont like having my Main PC on Standby because the fans are all running at the same time, making it noisy - and all my peripherals are switched on too. drawing power.

When i get round to decorating the house fully i will install ethernet and use MVP's, and like you say it will fit in very nicely as a server that just records things and keeps everything backed up. Media Center/Server combo just isnt really viable.

I liked what i saw in terms of remote access and backup though, its been well thought out.

Fair enough.

As for your fans being on, i think that's to do with having S1 standby enabled, rather than S3 standby.

As i understand it you have to set S3 standby before you install windows, as it's not something that can be changed post-install.

Regards.

I've finally got around to installing a Hauppauge Nova-t 500 board in my test WHS machine. Also installed GBPVR 99.12 and the cyberlink mux (5.0.1307). It seems to be working fine. Did a quick test record of friends and that recorded perfectly. I'm currently doing a dual recording test and it seems to be going okay. I've set up shares for Music,Video,Photos and Recordings. These can be found in d:\shares. So i've just pointer GBPVR to those folders in the config. Couldn't get through to xmltv.radiotimes.com though, luckily i had a backup file in my live system. Since i use GBPVR as a server system and via all recordings via MVPs Windows Home Server is a perfect fit.

The only downside i have at the moment is that the 2nd tuner in the Nova-t 500 didn't pick up all the muxes the 1st tuner did! If anyone has any ideas/fixes for that i'd be glad to hear them.

Edit:
I have recorded 2 programs simultaneously on the Nova-t 500. The one recorded on tuner 1 is perfect, but the one on tuner 2 is garbage. Has anyone else had problems with this capture card?

Anyway, something i noticed on the system plugin is that the free disk space is what's free on the D drive, rather than on the whole of my storage pool. I guess this will become a problem in that GBPVR will think the disk is full when it's actually not! Maybe that's something that can be modified in a future release of GBPVR.

Good tip, thanks, i'll remember that. I never liked sleep/hibernate functions much, but not knowing this might be the reason why!

I gave up on WHS a long time ago. It was balancing storage pretty much constantly and I couldn't watch in-progress recordings if I used the storage pool as my recordings drive.

So, I switched to MCE2005 as my server. Only reason being it's cheaper than XP.

Regards.
