Getting out of the hardware side of it, that is: The company has announced plans to sell off its remaining stock of Model 5500 DVRs and prepare for a new life as a seller of DVR software for PCs. O.k. I realize this is not directly linked to the forum, but I was curious about dialing into a ReplayTV dvr. My dad has one, but does not have it connected to the internet. But, he does have it connected to a phone line and that's how it dials out. So my question was being able to dial into to and transfer something to his unit. I know that sounds like a far reaching question, but I was just curious. I have high speed internet at my house, but not a home phone. With that said, I'm assuming that unless he hooked his unit up to a network that I would not be able to dial into it. Any other thoughts or suggestions on how to get something from my computer to his dvr without having to drive to him?

Wouldn't it be simpler to burn a DVD and send it and not involve the PVR at all?

Alternately if he does connect to a broadband network their are third party apps that make a computer pretend to be a replay and it may be possible to send it over the internet that way. Last time I used one you could only transfer files actually recorded on a real replay due to file issues but the utility may have been improved.

I have never seen Replay TV but it cannot be any worse than the WinTV2000 software currently bundled with Hauppauge cards.

I wonder if this will cause problems for new users of GBPVR. Doesn't GBPVR depend on some components of WinTV2000 to operate?

No, though some people use the video decoder that comes with it.

I dont think Hauppauge are switching to using/supplying ReplayTV though, more that ReplayTV will now sell a package containing a Hauppauge card and their software. For the most part, the Haupauge will still sell the same cards as today, with the same software. You might seem some additional bundles, or trial CDs in the box, but not much else.

The purpose of sending it over the internet was to save time in travel. For instance, if my dad's dvr failed to record something I could simply dial into it and transfer the file over to him. Yes, I could burn it to a DVD and snail mail it, but my point was to get it easily onto his machine. That way he could watch it on his television without having to do anything, but turn it on. I mean in that case I could always put it on a server let him download it and burn it to a dvd, but I was looking for something a little more simplistic.

Is that possible? For instance, I know that you can put stuff on Tivo units. Granted I have never tried myself, but I know that my friends have done that. They have dialed into the other tv and transfered files.

Thoughts?

Did you check out what you might be able to do for him with DVArchive?
