Universal Remote suggetsions?

I think only the expensive harmony(s) can use rf. So if you don't need it thereis no need to buy such one.
If you buyone with rf you might be able to control the computer directly with a rf-receiver:confused: .

Edit: one more: You don't need to install the harmony software, you can do it all online on their website, it's a lot quicker too.

I see that I can get the Logitech® Harmony 520 Remote Control is available locally for $79.99.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this low end of the Harmony line ?

my harmony is "low" end I think. It works great for me. I even have a tutorial posted: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=21936 that should make it pretty easy to use.

I love it and have one for each location with an HTPC.

Doing more research it appears to me that if I go with a jp1 or harmony remote that I will have to get a different ir receiver. True ?

Why do you think that? My harmony remote works perfectly with the ir-receiver I got with my 350-card.

I realize that the Logitech Harmony 520 Universal Remote I am looking at (cheap) is not even on the Logitech web site for remote products. I'm sure the price is for getting rid of them.

There are JP1 upgrades available for the Hauppauge remotes. The earlier remotes only need a simple cable for connection that can be home-built easily. The newer JP1.2 versions need a more sophisticated cable that you might want to purchase. The cable plus remote could cost $40 - $60 total.

When it comes to the harmony series, I don't know if there is any inherent difference between the models, except for number of keys, design, screen, memory size, etc.
The generic way they work I think is identical throughout the series (excpet when adding RF in 890 and above).

However 80$ for the lowest (?) end maybe isn't such a "deal"? Where are you located? I bought the 880 (quite at the high-end of them), few months ago for about 120$ CAD (after price-matching the hell out of BB, that is).

Re the IR receiver, my 880 can drive GB-PVR both over the IR receiver that came with the Hauppauge WinTV USB PVR, and both on the IR that came with the M$ Remote Control (which is what I use now).

Home Depot sells them cheap, but again the models have better features. I would just get one that the lowest price. I think it's $50 bucks at DH.

Thought about it for a minute and you might of been wanting to say HD.

Anyways I checked out HD and the Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote is $249.99 each.

The thing I didnt like about the Harmony 880 is the squeeky/plastic buttons. It kind of felt cheap.

My personal preference is remotes with real buttons rather than touch screen. I also prefer it to be rounded-ish on the back - square back corners like the ATI Remote Wonder II are just terrible to hold. I'm currently using a MX-850, but used a MX-500 before that.
