Greetings Folks

I have only just gotten gbpvr installed and running about a week ago. I've been doing ALOT of reading and of course run across EWA.

Now I absolutely do not want to offend anyone (cause I believe gbpvr and the community is GREAT - I couldn't say enough good things about it).

EWA looks very interesting and useful but being so new I would like to know if it is something that a newbie like myself should tackle at this stage of the game ?

Depends on your networking skills. Most of the issues I see related to EWA are firewall. Getting the ports opened up.

The other main issue is around streaming. But just for browsing and recording its pretty powerfull and convienient.

But theres nothing like the wife turning to you while out "I forgot to tape xxxxx" and starting up the phone (which can get on the internet) log on to gbpvr and schedule it for recording.

Those are the moments when my wife will say something like:"Don't look so #%&*&% arrogant" Big Grin

EWA is easy to get up and running on your internal network.....a version of EWA ships and installs with the GBPVR install itself.....you just need to enable it on the config tab of GBPVR.

After enabling there you can access the version that shipped with GBPVR by going to http://localhost:7647/gbpvr/ on the machine that is running GBPVR.

Some high level tips.....

In this forum you can get support for EWA as well as the latest info on the most current release of EWA (located as a sticky at the top of the forum). This release will usually be one ot two ahead of what ships with GBPVR. The wiki for EWA contains general info including help on setting it up.

If you want to access it from other machines on your network(assuming you have other machines on a network) you need to open port 7647 on the PC running GBPVR.

If you want to be able to stream your video and music you will need to install VLC on the machine running GBPVR and I highly recommend using it as the client it handles streaming of content much better than windows media player.

To enable streaming you access the config tab within EWA itself and fill in the necessary info. You will need to open port 7648 on the PC running GBPVR to enable the streaming content to go through the network.

That should be enough to chew on for now......things get just a little more difficult when you want to access EWA from outside your home network....we can cover that later once we get you up and running locally.

You should be able to get all the help you need quickly using this support forum.

Seeing this thread bring up a question i have.

For the most part I've given up my laptop and gone to a PPC. That being said while it's not a perfect solution to carrying around a laptop it's been successful.

I've been able to use a wifi connection to the PPC to access the ewa and get the TV guide, etc and even to play music from a hotel room. Pretty cool. Now is it possible to stream video to a PPC like i was able to for the laptop? I'm assuming that something else will need to be installed on the PPC to do this or maybe some kind of trans-coding before streaming?

If you have trouble with EWA turn off the firewalls on the machines as a test. Other than firewall issues it's very easy to get going.

It's also very useful to have VNC running on a laptop or another desktop and your PVR. That way you can remote in and fix or update things easily. I can't stand working on a PC at 720x480 hooked to my TV.
This also has the same issues with firewalls. If it doesn't work, try it with the firewalls off, then if that fixes the trouble figure out what port(s) it needs access to and open them up in your firewall.

Should be no different.....you will just need to have some sort of media player on your ppc....preferably VLC....otherwise Media Player will work. You will want to use streaming from the GBPVR PC for the connection......this takes care of the transcoding of the video down to a bitrate that will work over wireless......you just need to have VLC installed on GBPVR machine and enable streaming in the EWA config.

If you are running windows XP Pro then Remote Desktop works much better than VNC for desktop access.....if you only have XP Home then VNC is the best alterantive for remote desktop access.
