TVersity UPnP Media Server

David that TVersity looks good for your D-Link Media Lounge. You're not using it on MediaMVP are you?

I understand that there is limited support for UPnP on a MediaMVP using the replacement dongle available here through the forum, but I saw recently that due to memory limitations, the media library must be very small.

I bought my MVP for cheap from Radio Shack when they went on clearance, but I rarely use it. The VCR in our bedroom is broken, so I've been thinking about moving the MVP in to replace it. I am a little worried that my wife would actually like the MVP over the dlink, but the dlink actually plays more media types natively.

The dlink DSM-320 sure has a few quirks to it, but the TVersity software is so much better than the software that came with the dlink. It solves most of my problems, and I am waiting for new releases to fix the few remaining issues. The developers have temporarily changed their focus to add support for the xbox 360 and wii, but I hope they will come back to more general features soon. eric has added support in Comskip which I hope that TVersity will pick up soon, and possibly end my need to cut commercials out of the recordings.

GB-PVR and TVersity work great together, each using their strengths.

Actually I'm only speculating that is the problem. TVersity works well for me for me especially with my tweaked settings file. I think it is a good partner with GBPVR too and I've got some things to try once emulation is working so I hopeful the MVP can support them both.

I only have the mg35 today. I'd move the DSM up but the quality of the Roku's OSD and all its specs in general really do make it a serious candidate even though it has some power supply issues.

This sounds real interesting, but I don't understand what you mean by "port emulation mode". Could you tell me more?

I've been putting off trying the MVP dongle, but may need to take another look soon.

I bought my MVP to work with GB-PVR and never bothered installing the original software. As far as I know, the MVP is the only stand-a-lone client that works natively with GB-PVR. I am not familiar with all the servers that might work with the MVP, but GB_PVR get's my vote for "best".

The DSM-320 is a UPnP AV media player. It will work with just about any UPnP AV media server. TVersity is a third party media server that happens to work very well with the DSM-320, and other UPnP AV media players. TVersity catalogs local and internet based media and makes it available on your TV (through a media player). It provides access to photos, video and music. The functionality is pretty similar. My 320/TVersity combo has been pretty stable, though a few problems are still rather infuriating. I find my DSM-320 to be slightly more responsive than the MVP. I have not managed to hook myself on any of the neat GB-PVR plug-ins yet, though "weather" keeps tugging at me.

MediaMVP doesn't have all the features of the DSM series there is a new Media Lounge which is smaller than 320, but it has HDMI and I think wireless. I only got it in my hands for a short while. David thanks for the info, but you're family should enjoy using the MediaMVP and it makes a good replacement for the old VCR.

I have been eyeing the 510 and 520 for a while. I don't have an HD TV, so can't really use the HDMI yet. The 510 provides native support for dvr-ms, but only has composite out for older TV's. Guess I'll wait a bit longer.

"Emulation mode" is what I call a generic linux implementation of the Hauppauge communication protocol used by the GBPVR to talk to the MediaMVP's dongle.bin. My plans are to port it to as many "set up environments" as practical. If you run emulation mode on the mvpmc dongle.bin you are seeing the first implementation.

I hope you share you experiences related to the MG35. I'm inclined to spring for an MG-350HD when I buy my next HD TV (it'll be a while) and I'd like to hear a trusted source's review of any Media Gate product. Especially interesting with you porting MediaMVP to it.
