england is a country.. why should there be a 'national football team' (football is the real name for soccer, you silly americans Big Grin ) if it would not be...

Er, its both. England is obviously a country. UK is a country as well as a "sovereign state".

I think the point is that it a bit weird as the UK seems to be one country, made up of 3 sub-countries. Hell I live there and I don't get it Smile

The United Kingdom isn't a country - it is a collection of countries reigned by the British monarchy.

England, Scotland and Wales are countries within the UK and Northern Ireland is a province of the UK.
