Help me settle a debate I'm having with a friend....

england is a country.. why should there be a 'national football team' (football is the real name for soccer, you silly americans
 ) if it would not be...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe)

Er, its both. England is obviously a country. UK is a country as well as a "sovereign state".

I think the point is that it a bit weird as the UK seems to be one country, made up of 3 sub-countries. Hell I live there and I don't get it

The United Kingdom isn't a country - it is a collection of countries reigned by the British monarchy.
England, Scotland and Wales are countries within the UK and Northern Ireland is a province of the UK. Cheers, Brian
