Hi (especially those from the US that have MVPs in their GBPVR-based system)
I have noticed that the sale stock of MVPs in Sweden is getting low... I bought mine a month ago as one supplier had them on discount. I was lucky to get one.
In a few places, they are still in stock, but expensive. So I am considering when I will go to the US in two weeks to purchase one or even two while being there. Order at Amazon, and ship to the hotel.
In Sweden the plain wired one costs (USD exchange rate) around $160.

But before I do that, and also because there is some experience on MVP in this forum, I would like to ask if there would be any problem on using a US MVP in Europe.
I am hoping that the power adaptor can be run on 230V 50Hz (of course using a socket adaptor, you know). Can someone in the US verify this? If you look at the marking label on your MVP power adaptor.

Or, should I wait a bit if there are signs that Hauppauge is about to release an upgraded model? Maybe one that can do mpeg-4, dvd and HD...
The MVP is a nice thing, but it is getting a bit old.

Any thought would be appreciated!
Regards,
Stefan

there is a similar thead over at HAU 'bout the (lack of) availability of the MVP.
If you're interested, here's the link

You are OK. I checked my adapter, and it is 100 to 240 volts, 47/63 Hz. But the days of the MVP are numbered, at least in the U.S. The new digital broadcasts use only AC3 audio insofar as I can see, at least at my location. The MVP can not handle that. So even though you can see standard definition video (though not HD), you won't be able to hear anything. I hope Hauppauge is working on a successor too, but if not, several other companies are.

I would expect that when that happens, a transcoding option will show up to convert the audio.

Hauppuage gave me this explication "As for the supply problems with MediaMVP in Europe, until last month we did not have all of the parts necessary to make a RoHS version of MediaMVP. The last remaining parts are secured and we have a build in process now which should pop out in a week or so. And there will be much rejoicing among MediaMVP users in Europe!"

So please wait. Everyone should support the RoHS policies, even when not enforced by law.

Probably lead free packages. Just swear on the dotted line you will never throw it out. Well, unless it makes you really mad then there is a high likelihood of it going into orbit. It won't make the local landfill at least.

Wouldn't it be great if there would be GBPVR support for other media extenders? Let's face it, if it were not for the fantastic integration with GBPVR there would be no reason at all to buy a MVP. Just think about a box with true support for .avi, to name one thing....

Let's keep on dreaming of a better world.... Smile

Supporting other media extenders is my prime goal for all the recent work with emulation mode and mvpmc. sub would have to decide if he wants to support new native formats.

Hi all. Thanks for your replies. GBPVR was the only reason for me to get the MVP. I had been searching for a cost-effective integrated solution for a home theatre. Key in my reasoning was to re-use all I have got (A/V equipment, home LAN/WLAN, and computer). Key in this was also to be able to place AV-equipment anywhere in the house without facing a cabling problem and be able to enjoy all services everywhere. Obviously, a client-server architecture was my solution: My PC with GBPVR is a multimedia server, and the MVP is the client feeding the LCD TV and stereo. I only had invested in TV-cards (FireDTV-c and WinTV PVR150 MCE versions) and the MVP.
Installed the GBPVR and connected the MVP.
It really blew my mind. It just worked.

The MVP has its inherent limitations (we all know) so, is there ANY replacement at a reasonable price level that could be considered in the future. What requirements would you like to see?
From the top of my head:
1. Support more media formats internally => more computing power and internal memory.
2. More types of output (HDMI, component video, optical audio out)
3. Support a touch screen (optional, useful if I connect it to a stereo).

I also like the thin client approach where it searches for a boot/gui server on the network, although it makes the device dependent on having a network connection.

When I converted some of the digital recordings to DivX, I had to install an AC3 filter. Maybe someone could adapt that for use with GB-PVR. It would extend the life of my MVP for at least a year.
