So, I'm 99% done building my HTPC and now have to swap out my motherboard and processor between my HTPC and my office rig... the reason, you ask?

I made the fatal error of picking a Pentium D 805 processor for my HTPC... after I ordered I posted my build and somebody posted and warned me it would run hot, boy were they right. My HTPC works great but since it's confined in a cabinet under the TV it runs pretty hot and after about an hour or two it will shut down due to heat.

In the process of researching this issue I found a very useful page:
http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm

The key info there is the "Thermal Design Power" or TDP, basically it's a statistic that measures how much heat a processor will emitt. Intel and AMD take different approaches to providing this statistic though. AMD measures worst case scenario (high load, poor ventilation, etc), while Intel measures what they consider "realistic situations" (average load, typical ventilation). This means that numbers provided by Intel are going to appear lower than AMDs. With that being said, here is a comparison of my two processors, they are actually fairly comparable as far as price and power but the Athlon knocks the Pentium D out of orbit as far as heat efficiency.

Intel Pentium D 805
TDP: 95W

AMD Athlon 64-3500+
TDP: 62W
TDP: 35W (if processor is run at lower voltage 1.25V instead of 1.4 - some performance drop is likely)

As you can see, I'm thinking the AMD processor will do much better in the cabinet. It's a single core processor, the Pentium D is a dual core but it was probably overkill to begin with.

I hope somebody can learn from my mistake. I think the link I posted is an accurate source but post in this thread if you think different.

Good luck and good building everybody Smile

Yeah, I remember reading up about this when I was building my HTPC. I wanted a dual-core, just so I didn't lose any performance if a show was transcoding and another was recording, etc.

I looked at the Pentium D's, but for the reason you listed, I stayed away from them. I ended up splurging and going with the Core2Duo.

I'll have to look at my numbers and see at what temperature my HTPC runs. I only have 2 exhaust case fans, CPU fan and the power supply fan in it. The Sapphire ATI X1300 video card is passively cooled (no fans), which is the main reason I bought it.

I think a Pentium M would be great but it's hard to find desktop boards for them. You could run it passive without issue I would think. The thermal spec is 100c :O.

I know it's old technology, but for the last 8 mo. or so I've been using a laptop with this chip and am seriously impressed. It will almost keep up with my P4 3.0 and it's only a Banais 1.4.

I suppose you might need a Dothan or the fastest of that generation for HD though. Or maybe they just wouldn't cut it for HD, but that's a ways out for me yet.

As a testament to AMD's "Cool 'N' Quiet" the rig in my signature idles at 35*C!! Heavy load brings it up to 39*C. Big Grin

The case helps it quite a bit, the best part is that it is SILENT.

NPVR Rig: HP Laptop, 3rd Gen i7, 8gb DDR3, 250gb SSD (OS), Records to 6tb array on my server, Silicon Dust HDHomeRun PRIME

I suppose it also depends on the case. With my Antec NSK2400, I bet heat would not be a problem. My case doesn't sit in a cabinet though as I use it as my main system with recording capabilities so airflow is not a problem. My processor idles at 28-35 depending on ambient temperature and my build is almost exactly like rowle1jt's.

That's darn good! My C2D idles around 37*C, I haven't loaded it up to see how high it gets, and it's pretty quiet as well. The 2 Silverstone case fans are the loudest things in it, and I can only hear those when I am next to the case.

yes heat is very bad, look what happens when it gets too hot

that may or may not be real... but its funny

That is pretty funny... but I really doubt it is real. I could see the processor smoking and that's about it. Blowing a hole through the motherboard and the table below it
