I hope Hauppauge has placed an order for a bunch of these

I have been increasingly worried that HD would eventually kill off DIY PVR's (at least in the States). Hopefully products like this are a step in the right direction.
AMD Athlon II 630 on Asus mobo
XP Pro
2 Gigs DDR3
PVR 150
200 g HD (OS and Programs)
1 TB Recordings Drive
Asus Integrated Graphics with HDMI out
Harmony 659 Remote
Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3200 STB dedicated to GBPVR
Schedules Direct EPG Service

I hope they've ordered the much cheaper chip Apple as that is talked about here.

what will it encode from? uncompressed component video  that would be nice.

HD isnt exactly going to kill off DIY PVRs, copy protection will. there are already products that can get over the air (ATSC) HDTV, and QAM (cable, "in the clear"). however to get premium digital channels from cable you need a cablecard (or something else that will decrypt the stream).

you can get a cablecard in your computer BUT the entire system has to be certified by cablelabs (I think that who has to do it). and the only way to buy a tuner with a cable card is IN a certified system, aka, you cant go buy one. so DIY PVRs will turn into "Buy a Dell" if you want to have digital cable Sad

its sad, I know

As I understand it, there is currently no way to record even unencrypted HD channels from a STB. I may eventually try over the air HD but Montreal only has a channel or two available (i think one of them is in french).

Same thing here, CBC and Radio Canada are the only ATSC signals, and I don't even now if there is any QAM available, hopefully I will find out later this week when I install the HVR 1600. I'm looking forward to watching the Stanley Cup coming home in HD!

From what I understand there are firewire drivers to access to SA 8300 HD PVR, and even view/save some content, I haven't bother because I only have the SA 8000.

you dont need a STB to record QAM channels, but they have to be in the clear (no encryption). if you use a STB the only way to get HD out of it is over component cables.

I would be very surprised/happy if that chip will allow encoding of uncompressed HD streams!

Google for timmmore and firewire for more info.

There are some threads on this forum where people were doing this in GB-PVR. From memory the TVPI recording plugin eventuated from these efforts.
