I purchased an LCD TV Monitor (no tuner) this weekend for a smokin' price! However, it's so new that there aren't any "universal" codes for the remote Also, I had to move my HD tuner from my PVR to the TV so that we could get the Dish DVR working (it's TV2 so I needed to be able to tune to channel 60). BTW, GBPVR is for *me* - The wife and kids get the crap Dish DVR and I can record on GBPVR to my hearts content

Anyway, to turn the the thing on, you have to have 1 remote to turn on the TV, another remote to turn on the HD tuner and then the Dish remote to change channels. :eek:

I've heard you guys talking about the Harmony Remotes, and was wondering if you could impart some opinion/advice about them. What I need is for it to be able to "learn" remote codes, play macros and send Dish Network UHF remote commands. Oh, it would also be nice to work for my VCR and DVD player too

I did a quick search for Harmony Remotes and got a little lost (or impatient) trying to figure out which model did what. Right off the bat I see the 550, 670., 880, 890 etc.

Anyway, I was hoping to get some words of wisdom from this awesome brain trust!

I love my Harmony remote as it has the Activities based functions which can set up any number of devices in sequence with one button push. I tried the MX500 first but found that lacking as i had to push multiple buttons to watch a DVD, watch GBPVR etc. Once I found the Harmony 659 I was sold on the activity idea. I bought a used one on ebay for under $50. This past Christmas I picked up a new 880. It does everything the same as the 659 but with a colour screen and has a rechargable battery vs. alkaline batteries.

If you want out of sight RF capability I think the next model up has that. But for a low price the 659 is a bargain.

The harmony will also learn codes easily. Just point at the bottom of the remote and go

What brand of tv is it? Just a guess but if it's westinghouse you can use sony codes for it.

It's an Olevia 37" LCD - got it for $547 (US) at Frys. I found a posting on some website about RCA codes working with some models so I went through them all on the Dish remote ( 30 or so, and none of them worked :mad: )

I knew that there were going to be, uh, issues with this TV. No tuner, remote control compatibility, etc. but man, 1080i OTA is awesome!

Hopefully in the 1.0 release the GBPVR Client can play .ts files so I can watch my recorded shows on it

I also have an olevia LCD tv, and just purchased 2 universal remotes(and ran into the same problem both times...) . After returning them to the store, I saw a sony programmable remote(RM-VL600) for $20. I was able to program all the functions to whatever functions I wanted it to do with both the LCD TV and my generic stereo which is also hard to find codes for. Its available from newegg.

Aha! I've been trying to figure out how to do a "scan" with a dish remote. I couldn't find it on their site. I'll give this a shot tonight and let you know how it works out.

@zeroexecutioner - thanks for the tip, I may end up getting one of those if I can't get the dish remote to handle all of it.

No joy on the "power scan". I even tried it twice. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for a good deal on a Harmony remote.

Hey Fly- it looks like we are on the same page. I too am looking for a remote solution like this. I saw this post and then looked on e-bay for a Harmony 659. I saw a new one close this afternoon for $59 + $5 shipping. I may try to get one as soon as I get some extra toy money. It will help the WAF a bunch.
