well I know that in February 2009 or so then the local stations will be required to broadcast in a digital signal and do away with their analoge one but that shouldn't require any cable card to view. I receive them fine now. I guess if cable companies are ever required to go all digital then that might cause a problem.

Nope, as I said above, you have to use a HDHomeRun or OnAirGT or selected models of the Hauppauge HVR1600.
QAM tuning is not covered by the BDA standard, so each and every manufacturer implements QAM tuning via their own proprietary interface. GB-PVR supports those three devices because the manufactures have supplied information about how this tuning is done. Nothing is known about how the dvico or avermedia card QAM tuning is done, so its not possible in GB-PVR.

If you do a forum search you should find the exact details on which of the HVR1600's support QAM. From memory it was something like models 74021 and 74041.
