Video Out Query

Do I need any special video card for output to a TV? There is a discontinued card (ATI 3D Rage LT Pro 8MB PCI Video Card with TV Out) that I thought I would use. It does not have DVI or S-Video, but neither does the TV I intend to use in this first PVR interation. I could spend a little more and get these output options, plus DirectX etc and more memory, but do I really need it?

You're definitly going to want to get a better card then that.
If you're hooking up to a CRT TV then you will need at a minimum a card with composite out (yellow RCA style plug) I would recommend spending a little more on the card to make sure you get a nice smooth playback.

Thanks. This card does have composite-out for my CRT-TV. I just didn't know if there was any need for the other bells and whistles of fancier cards (other than DVI and S-Video out) since I am not a gamer and will only use this to output video from computer to the TV. btw, I will be using a HVR-1600 as a TV capture card. If this is underpowered even for TV watching, then I will opt for a better one.

That video card (ATI 3D Rage LT Pro 8MB PCI) will definitely be underpowered for TV watching. The video card has to do quite a bit and an old 8MB card just isn't going to cut it.

I agree, while you may be able to playback mpg2, you definately won't be able to playback digital recordings. I have an old ATI RagePro 32MB that works okay for mpg2, but chokes on everything else.
If you are planning on recording digital (ATSC or DVB) then you'll want a card with a hardware decoder. There's a sticky thread on the support forum that addresses this. Otherwise you could probably get away with an older, more affordable card like an Nvidia MX440 for instance. If you are just doing regular analog (mpg2) then try it out, it may work for you, if not, then you're no worse off.

Whoops, just noticed the HVR-1600 in your post. Since it's digital, you'll definately want a better card. You can find them for < $40. Check out this sticky.

Thank you. Now the trick: find an affordable PCI card with composite or Svideo out, preferably with DVI just in case....
