bah, a whiney punk who doesnt want to get his hand dirty and fix his problems, rather pay someone for it.
want program setup pain? try mythtv before knoppmyth or jarods setup manual for fedora. try downloading 100+ obscure libraries and manually editing all the make files. GB-PVR is a godsend compared to that. its free, and does a damn fine job doing what I want it to, play videos, record tv, and play music.

Ah, I'm not bothered. I know GB-PVR isn't going to be for everyone.
I'm the first to admit it's not as polished as some of the commercial offering, but I think its pretty good (particularily for the price).

Well, considering the wide audience of Slashdot, I tend to not pay attention to what 80% of people say on there.
For me, I perfer GB-PVR over commercial versions, especially with what came with my Hauppage card. When I first got my HTPC going, my plan was to use MythTV and Linux. I spent an entire day trying to get it to work (and I'm not really a Linux n00b, sort of). I didn't succeed, so I went searching on the internet for a Windows solution. When I saw GB-PVR I was instantly attracted. It looked nicer then paid versions, and It has a lot more functionality (at least from what I can tell), not to mention it can be developed for, and it constantly getting imporved on (of course it's free, although I donate to the cause anyway). I agree with tblackwe. If he would actually use it daily, I think he would change his mind. This project has been going for only a year or 2? Look how far it has come. Sub and whoever else works on it are very talented (I couldn't program my way out of a box). If you want a simple solution that will never change and doesn't allow for improvements or expansions, go waste money on commercial versions, but if you want quality work that someone enjoys doing out of thier free time, use GB-PVR. Sure it's not perfect, but it works great every day, without any problems. Your doin great work Sub!

/. 'ers are notorious linux lovers. If GB-PVR were running on Redhat it would be the best thing since sliced bread for them.
As far as PVR software goes, I have found GB-PVR to be outstanding. Sub has done an awesome job and it could not be easier to set up. If you have no knowledge of available guides or using IR software, don't build a PVR and buy an HP Media Center. My $0.02. Thanks, Paul

its a pretty safe bet that most people here think gbpvr is the best pvr program out there, and for good reason, it is.
nuff said.

I've seen positive comments on /. too mind you.

I haven't run Media Center since I loaded GB-PVR. It's not that much harder to set up, less proprietary, and I think it works better than MCE. So there...

When I first got my pvr-350, I was going between the BeyondTV and SageTV forums trying to decide which one to use when I saw a mention of gb-pvr on HardForums.com. I tried it and loved it. The only problem I had was in the "Quality Profile Settings" Once I found out that it was for fine-tuning EACH of the settings and not for setting the default I was set. From reading on the forum I am not the first one to make that mistake though so I dont feel bad
I think that guy just spent 10 minutes on gb-pvr and quit. With ANY program you have to learn how it works and this takes time. GB-PVR takes no more time than any other program that I use. |
