I was one of the few guys who used the TV-Out of the PVR 350. To keep up with the latest release I want to change my configuration and use the TV-Out of my graphics card.

My question is, is it better to use a standard resolution like 1280x1024 or to change to the pal standard 704x576. Which resolution provides the better picture quality?

Thanks

the PAL standard will give you the best PQ,

there are plenty of guides on how to set up the TV out, including the dissapointing MPEG2 decoding sticky thread, that is a very good resource. as well as most of csy's posts.

cheers

Depends on your TV. Use it's native resolution.

If it's an NTSC Standard Def unit (i.e. CRT) then use 720x480. If it's an 1024x768 LCD, then use that - etc...

Switching from 800x600 to 720x480 on my standard def setup made a significant difference for me.

I'm in PAL (I) Land and have found best picture quality is obtained with 1024 x 576 or 1440 x 576. I set these resolutions in powerstrip and output at 50Hz progressive via VGA port on a Radeon 9600XT through an RGB to YUV colourspace converter. I use a 32inch PAL Progscan SD CRT for display.

It all depends on what your display device is. Also depends (on my setup) as to which video renderer is selected. I find the picture quality in Overlay is best at 1440 x 576 but at 1440 x 576 res there is tearing in VRM9 modes.

Get powerstrip, start at 720x576 and see how you get on.

The OP was using Tv-out on the 350 so is on analogue tv for now.

Start with 720x576 and see how you get on. this is what works for me on a CRT TV. I don;t see the point of setting a higher vertical res when your tv recordings will all be 720 or less.

Also, do as Ted said.

Fair enough. I'll have lots of fun working with PAL when I'm in Australia. For now, I'll concentrate on NTSC while I can test...

And now, back on topic...!

pal picture is nominally around 720x576. If you are doing post processing on video signal and outputting an analogue signal (VGA) then higher res can give subjective improvements. Use whatever horizontal res gives best pic in your setup. Providing horizontal timing is correct it doesnt do any harm. VGA dacs wont mind, TV wont mind.
