I saw a dvico TVIX box yesterday, that can play H264 and DivX and is networked ... $$$ but pretty cool, I must say. Bult in HD and a bit of a noisy fan on top... not sure if mvpmc could work on it though ...

mvpmc can run on pretty much any linux based box, of almost any generation so probably every media extender you read about will support it, other than maybe the xbox 360. Depending on which dvico model you want, you can get a state-of-the-art machine but based on what I've read look for the Sigma Design EM8634 and not EM8622 chip.

What's sad is the vendors are supposed to provide the linux source for these devices but don't and as a result we can't do the work necessary to actually do a port. This is sader because if you read the user reviews, regardless of the make all the "firmware" on modern STB devices is faulty, and just like the Hauppauge software they don't make the best use of the hardware. Projects like mvpmc could actually help sell machines and improve the usability.

I saw the 5100SH and 4000SA models, Sigma Design EM8623 and 8621 resp. http://www.tvix.co.kr/Eng/products/5100sh.aspx

This blurb has some discussion on the Sigma Design EM8634 one... and this device apparently http://www.limhd.com/en/main.asp has that chip (Mainly in Chinese). Maybe sub can "help them out" with the interface...

Here's an English page http://www.tomacro.com/english/Product_L...i_Vieo.htm of the same device.

I'm just fiddling around with VGA out from my wife's notebook (trying to )playing H264 and Xvid files to my new HDTV (using 15D Input ATM) .... not that impressed with PQ that far, wondering if it is the Notebook capabilties (older COMPAQ Presario 2126AC with ATI Radeon IGP 320M chip) or something else, like H264 encoding or the DivX encoding. Pretty crap picture tbh.

Was looking at a Philips DVP5986K (= DVP-5982/37 in NA), it can play off a USB (only 1.1 but plays 2.0 devices too.. so bit limited) BUT none of these have the GBPVR capabilities...

So until or unless a good Media Extender comes along, the only real option is a POC next to the TV, which I was hoping to avoid (as well as long RCA or even HDMI Cables...)

Sadly, this commercial abuse of open source licence seems to be growing... Over here our bigest telecom supplier still has problems with its (ab)use of GPL code in its flagship broadband router (as far as I know)

Keep up the good work Wink

i saw the dish500 box source a while back on the Front page of the dish site..Smile
it's a pvr with hard drive and all..kinda old but nice capabilities..should be easy to find used for cheap..has all sorts of unused features, video ins, printer ports,
but sadly, no network access on outside except modem...
i think someone sued them into placing it on the website...Big Grin

would source for things like that be helpful?
[other stbs with suitable hardware]

EDIT: i see it's just partial source...for the GPL parts..no complete build kits..

A satellite STB would be an excellent candidate for mvpmc, in fact the closest thing to the MediaMVP hardware is found on the Dreambox DM500. These FTA devices already support mpeg-ts, and now most support digital audio, HD and even h.264, but there are some issues with support for both PAL/NTSC.

Of course the new satellite hardward is great for PVR use, but it has limited appeal to those that want to also use the device for native divx/xvid and Windows Media. This is where a "real" media extender is needed.

Any movement on an HD extender for GBPVR? I saw this for Sage:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27530

An HD MVP would be ideal, but I haven't heard of a timeframe. Not that I would even be able to do HD right now anyway given my system....

A new device based on the chipset that I have anticipated so much, might be showing up soon if you follow info at mpcclub or avsforum. http://www.popcornhour.com/ It's actually uses the EM8635 chip which is better because it has embedded CSS and their pricing is very competitive.

I've been talking to them and unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to do any mvpmc like port to the device. However it looks like an EWA or similar plugin might be possible and I might try an emulation mode plugin to fit in with the others that have already been done. Here are some examples.

Not to be selfish (Well maybe a little Smile ) But emulation is all I need. LOL A device like this that can replace my MVP and play HD over component (I have an older HDTV) would be ideal.

Now to upgrade my server, get a hauppauge 1600, get another 1600, a bigger hard drive, a better graphics card, etc, etc.....
