The one thing (the only thing) in the original MVP Software from Hauppauge I liked was the 0 to 9 keys. Pressing 4 on the remote would jump to start playing 40% through the file, pressing 7 would jump to 70% - you get the idea. pressing 0 would jump to start from the beginning.

Is this difficult to achieve with both XRecord and My Videos?

its more of a gbpvr thing, the plugins have no control over this, you can jump x number of minutes in gpbvr (which i believe is better) by hitting say "20" then the skip button to skip 20 mins.

Is this kind of hidden magic key press written down somewhere?

err its probably in the wiki, i just read it in a post one day (well i think i did, otherwise i just pressed it and went "oh wow!" ).

I think that both things are good. For instance, if I stop watching a 2 hour movie right in the middle I do not want to jump there using the skip forward button. The latter is better suited for "fine-jumping".
