Hey sub, if you talk to these guys, I have a cost controlling idea. If open source developers, like yourself, are willing to design a plugin interface that allows server side control of what time of day the connection is made, they could spread out server activity and get by with less muscle (I think). Instead of being bombarded with traffic at whatever default time particular programs set, on the first connect (and each subsequent connect for that matter) they could apportion their users across a wider time period.
If the interface allowed picky users to opt out and choose their own connect time, everyone wins. I doubt all that many people care when the update takes place-though the ones that do might be very vocal.
