Another thing to look at, (which is not part of the Installer error problem) is:

Is your Media Center Scheduling Service set to Automatic or Manual?

In task manager, you would see 'esched'

There is something wrong with your computer that may be out our grasp. If the installer won't succeed, there's no sense doing a manual install as the symptoms will still persist. the installer and the utilities are using the same programming language...

(If it were just the GUI, that may be different as its written in a different programing language...)

I would confirm Windows has been updated with all the 'critical updates' and most 'Recommended'...

How does GB-PVR run on the PC (not MVP)? OK?

win update runs automatically I checked today , no updates recommended, gbpvr runs great ,it has for the 3 yrs that I have had this media center also my 3 mvp's have been great also.

Well the installer error will probably be best handled by whurlston... Something is either missing, wrong version, or something is preventing the software from running

I wonder if it has anything to do with me running the installer about 5 or 6 times over the last 5 day???? It doesn't bother me much, I created a new disk image before I started this endeavor, so worst case I restore and in 15 min it's like it never happenedBig Grin Wish my life was that easilyBig Grin fixed

The installer is a simple uncompress utility. Running it multiple times has no adverse effects. I will add some better error handling to it but I am extremely swamped at the moment so I don't know when I will get to it.

I will send you a PM with some special instructions to try tonight.

I will say upfront that I have not read through this entire thread, but I have tried to search for this specific error (as well as errors in general) and haven't found anything resembling my problem. So please forgive me if this a duplicate issue.
I am running MCE2005
This is what I see when I run the following command
mceepgdownloader list-headends

9/11/2007 10:45:35 PM - Starting MceEpgDownloader (2005 Edition) v1.0.0.6
9/11/2007 10:45:35 PM - Preparing to retrieve headendlist
9/11/2007 10:45:36 PM - - Connecting.
9/11/2007 10:45:38 PM - - Downloading.

FYI, I have my epg populated and regularly downloading via MCE, and the xml conversion portion of the process seems to work fine.

congenictv Wrote:I think I got it to work now after I re-read carefully the posts. For some reason I thought the MCE2XML_GUI would do everything for me. Download the MCE EPG from Microsoft and then convert it to XML and place the file in the Output directory.

As it turns out, everytime I clicked "Download Listings" from the GUI, I get a 1kb .XML file in the Output directory.

But based on these two posts, I guess as long as you have Vista MCE download the EPG already...then all you need to run is the MceEpg2XmlTv.exe. Which is what I did and it produced a 20 meg .XML file.

I clicked Update EPG from config.exe of GBPVR, and it said it was reading the XMLTV file...saving the channels or something and voila my scheduled appeared.

I guess I was confused to the GUI's function based on its name (MCE to XML)and to what was placed in the original UpdateEPG.bat

"C:\EPG\MCE2XML_GUI.exe" auto

but instead i have REM'ed it out and placed

"C:\EPG\MCEEPG2XmlTv.exe" instead...

Thus making GBPVR run the utility to convert the EPG database (wherever it is magically located) that i assume MCE downloads on its own on a regular basis... and GBPVR will read the .XML file after it has ran MceEpg2Xmltv.exe.

I hope I got this right... the wiki didn't really explain a lot of this to me though.

Thanks again whurlston for the awesome work! Hope this will be a solution that can be used indefinitely.

This post helped me alot.

I finally got Vista WMC to (re)recognize my tv tuner and reran setup to ensure I was getting guide data. Now that I am, I used the GUI and configured.

Based on above (hating to repeat, but desperately wanting to verify), the updateEPG.bat only needs to contain "C:\EPG\MCEEPG2XmlTv.exe". This utility will force the already scheduled / downloaded WMC guide data into the [headend].xml file, which in turn, is read into GBPVR at the preset 'Update EPG' time in the GB-PVR config app.

So now that I have Media Center properly setup, I can assume it will download guide data and MCEEPG2XmlTv.exe will take care of the rest?

Do I have this right? No need to download using MCE2XML_GUI.exe for a single lineup?

Thanks!

The GUI is a fancy batch file. That's it. If you only need to export, then the export line in the UpdateEPG.bat is correct.

You could also use the GUI and uncheck 'Fresh EPG download'. That does the same thing. It opens, calls the Exporter and closes...

To be clear, if you are using the commandline tools directly, you SHOULD NOT use the GUI, and Vice versa... The GUI was built to use the tools, but expects that the tools have been left in defaults. If you tinker, you could break the GUI

This is not a duplicate issue. I've never seen these errors before. It's not something being thrown by my code as I don't directly call any of the functions in the error. It must be something in the MCE dlls that are being accessed although I cannot imagine why it is happening.

Are you running it under a non administrative account by any chance?
